We are staying in Maho Bay camps so no blender.
I like fruity drinks but am not a mixologist by any means.
What do you make?
Also - about that rum? Any suggestions/recommendations?
Rum, coke, ice. Coke, rum, ice. Ice, rum coke. Rum, coke, ice, lime twist (for fruity) For real fruity, rum, fruit punch, ice. You can't go wrong with any of the above. Rum and ice mix with ANYTHING.(tu);)
I agree, rum and anything. I use fruit juices and sometimes a little coco lopez.
World Famous Soggy Dollar Painkillers or a close rip off.
1 part cream of coconut, 2 part dark rum, 4 part pineapple juice, 1 part orange juice. I use a gallon jug, 48 oz can of pineapple juice, 12 oz of orange juice, 750 ML of Dark Cruzan Rum (it's about 25 oz - so close enough), 12 oz of Coco Lopez (the can is usually 15 oz, so I just use most of the can). Before adding the Coco Lopez, sit the can in a bowl of hot water, let it sit until it sounds liquefied when shaken. This keeps the little white specks of coconut from forming. Don't forget to garnish with fresh grated nutmeg.
Enjoy!
PS You can get the nutmeg and grater shown above at St John Spice http://stjohnspice.com/
hmmm - i must have been hit with a coconut but what exactly is Coco Lopez?
here you go
Cream of Coconut
Once upon a time there was no Piña Colada...THE HORROR!
The heart of the coconut had long been an important ingredient in many delicious desserts from the tropical islands. The problem was that getting the coconut cream from the pulp was easier said than done. Don Ramon Lopez Irizarry set out to find an easier way of doing this. In his small laboratory in Puerto Rico, he developed the original Coco Lopez by blending the delicious cream from the hearts of Caribbean coconuts with the exact proportion of natural cane sugar.
Suddenly Coco Lopez became the basis for a fabulous tropical drink called "Piña Colada" which made its first appearance in 1954. Quite a few bartenders and part-time mixers claim to be the inventors of the "Official Beverage of Puerto Rico." Either way, there's no doubt that the unique combination of Coco Lopez Cream of Coconut, pineapple juice and Puerto Rican Rum is the most refreshing tropical cocktail you'll ever have. In fact, only the original Coco Lopez Cream of Coconut meets the necessary conditions of flavor and consistency to prepare the perfect Piña Colada!
Tourists that came to Puerto Rico and tasted our Piña Colada loved it so much they took Coco Lopez home so they could continue to enjoy "The Taste of the Tropics." Today, Coco Lopez has expanded its distribution into 50 countries including Europe, Japan, Central America and the United States. Now Coco Lopez is as close as the supermarket!
If you've never tried a Piña Colada, try one today! But as always, make sure it's made with Coco Lopez. That way you can enjoy the original, the perfect Piña Colada from Puerto Rico. Salud!
Watch out for ants in the Coco Lopeze at Maho. I found putting it in a zip lock sandwich bag works. If you make the standard pina colada recipe on the rocks that works just fine!! I do that for beach drinks and freeze the mixture. The block ice at Maho keeps things nice and cold.
Our two favorite high balls on island are Mount Gay Cuba Libres and Gosling's Dark and Stormys.
Cheers, RickG
Good Call Rick - Any extra room in your bags throw in some zip lock bags (big and small) you will find 1001 uses for them.
Tomorrow at this time I too will be in STJ, but we are not roughing it 🙂
My favorite drink in the islands is a:
red lion
2 shots of grand mariner
1 shot of gin
squeeze the juice out of 1/4 of orange
squeeze the juice out of 1/4 lemon
Pour over crushed ice and shake lightly
garnish - who gives a crap after the second one
Great drink to watch a sunset!
Cruzan Blacky Cherry Rum and Diet Coke is simple to make and tasty . . .
I also like any of the flavored rums with Sprite.
Coconut Cruzan Rum with Pineapple Juice.
Coconut Cruzan Rum with mix of Pineapple and Orange Juice (knock-off of the Painkiller above).
Banana Cruzan Rum with mix of Pineapple and Orange Juice (knock-off of Ivan's Bananawacker)
Yummy!
Good Luck! Have Fun!
where is the closest liqour store in cruz bay?
coconut cruzan with cranberry juice.
Mixology is in the lumber yard complex is the closest to the ferry dock. other wise the food stores have it to. The place next to JJ's texas Has it to but I don't think they have any mix.
Rum
Ice
Lime
Drink copiously
If you have rum, it must be Cruzan! 😉 Great mixers, beyond the ubiquitous Coke, and in keeping with the KISS method : ginger beer, Ting, ruby red. These also go well with vodka for the non-rummers...
Cruzan Mango or Black Cherry Rum with one of the V8 Splash juices. They have them at Starfish. I like Berry Blend.
Fresh grated nutmeg on top, of course.

No blender-improvise, mon you're in the islands.
Find a wide mouth jar-pickles, olives, whatever. Throw out (or eat) what's inside. Wash.
Squeeze in half a lime (preferably key), add Cruzan, sugar syrup (or sugar), ice. Tighten lid. Shake like mad.
Drink.
Modify your quantities. Drink. Soon you won't miss the blender.
No sugar-use a flavored Cruzan.
My favorite drink is just pineapple or coconut rum on ice. Keep the bottle in the refrigerator so it's really cold and just sip it.
So looking forward to that in 3 mos.
vanilla run with cranberry and pineapple juice
all these sound yummy. rick - you were able to freeze stuff at maho using only block ice?
i am bringing a small thermos down. I figured I will fill it up and head to the beach. DH will drink beers.
