Where is the best place to rent snorkle gear and how much does it cost? Does it make sense to buy and bring it to the island if you don't use it often?

Cruz Bay Watersports has been mentioned before. If you only plan to use them for a few days, it is probably best to rent.
We did not rent during our last trip. If you will be using for the week, it is slightly cheaper to buy and bring with you. Then you do not have to wait for them to open, make the selection, get past the fact you are sharing a mouthpiece with someone before you, not worry about losing something and get it back to them before they close.
Less hassle and more fun.

strongly agree w. what chris has said. MUCH more flexibility if you have your own gear. plus, this time of the year, many sporting goods stores in the U.S.are offering discounts on snorkle gear. rental fees range from zero, if you are a guest at the resort where gear is rented (e.g. sapphire beach/resort on STT), to $5-10 per hour.

Snorkel set (mask, snorkel, fins) will be about $50/week at Cruz Bay Watersports or at Crabby's in Coral Bay.
