Does anyone know anything about snorkeling mangroves in STJ (or is it just STT?).

Thanks in advance 🙂

When we had gone to STT 4-5 years ago, we went with Virgin Island Ecotours on their kayak trip through the mangroves. It was an EXCELLENT tour/adventure through an area that was beautiful - and one that most never see! Their guide was wonderful and extremely knowledgeable about all we saw! I highly recommend the tour!

It appears from their website that they offer one on St. John as well... here is their link:

A couple of years ago, hubby & I went snorkeling out of Coral Bay STJ on the Serena Sea with with Captain Nina. I'd suggest going in the a.m. on the 1/2 day trip--for angle of sunlight into the mangroves. The colors of the soft corals and the juvenile fish were amazing. Some of the waters are shallow, so you do need to be a good snorkeler. Note that there were also spiney urchins that you had to avoid. For us, it was one of the best snorkeling experiences we've had. (And, we've snorkeled all around STJ on various charters--for those beaches that are too far for us to hike--or only accessible by water.) See http://www.bookitvi.com/serena.htm for information. You can also book through the boat's owner at the t-shirt shop across from Skinny Legs. My info is from 2005, but the website is still active, so that's a good bet that they are still doing the charters. Whatever you decide, have a great vacation.

I'm really prone to sea-sickness...I'm afraid I'd get sick on a boat that small 🙁

Is there a way to sit in the very front of the boat? That's the only way I don't get sick.

Mangrove snorkeling is great. Lots to see that you don't normally see when you snorkel. There are baby fishes and moms watching over them, big fish eating little fish, you should try it. We stay on STJ and have rented dinghies from Crabby's in Coral Bay. I think it's Princess Bay that we snorkel. The owner of Crabby's can tell you. If you get seasick, I am pretty sure that you can get into the water from the road at Princess. We've seen cars pulled over there. It's not gross or anything. Give it a try!!
