I need someones advice-- from personal experience!--on the best place to snorkel on St. Croix. My husband and I are in our early 50's and not very adventurous when it comes to water... so where should we go to "putter" around and snorkel in fairly shallow, not grassy water? Also a beach that we would feel safe being on-- not isolated. Is Cane Bay tame enough for us?! We will be on the island in a week now!! This web site has been a goldmine of information. We really appreciate everyones input here.

Cane Bay will be fine. Also, the snorkeling at the Buccaneer is excellent and the beach is beautiful. They do charge $6 to enter thier property and park at the beach, but it's worth it.

Hello Paula,

Good suggestions for beaches to go to.

If you are timid about being in the water you might pick up a kickboard or little float board from K-mart (on St. Croix) and use it to float along or just for an extra sense of security if you get tired from swimming and want to rest/float for a bit.

Also visit a dive shop. They make floatation vests. I believe the shop at Cane Bay even rents them for $5.00.

Good ideas! My husband swims like a fish and doesn't understand that I have a fear of the water. I guess my biggest fear is that I'm blind without my glasses. I'm brining contacts to wear in the water and hope that allows me to see something.

I'm anxious to get to STX and try it. We'll be there Sunday.........I guess it's time to think about packing.

Sharon,
I'm a little uncomfortable in snorkel gear only because I tend to keep claustrophobic in the mask. You can find floats with magnifying glass set into the head rest so you can keep your glasses on, your head out of the water and conveniently, also has a drink holder!
Pamela.

That sounds like my sort of snorkeling. Actually, I have tried various magnifying masks although my vision is sooooooooooooo bad that it doesn't really help. Will any drink do or is it a special VI delight?

Thanks for the information everyone! We'll probably try Cane Bay and the Buccaneer, Linda-- they sound like our "level" I guess you'd say. How about the area at the Divi? The pictures of that beach are georgous, but I'm curious about the swimming there. It's been 30 years since I've swam on the island--- we used to snorkle at Pelican Cove where the Cormorant is now, but I hesitate to go there because of reading that the neighborhood in that area is alittle unfriendly now. We arrive back on St. Croix in 6 days now!!!

I go to Hibiscus to the beach right next door to Cormorant and we go to Trivia night every Monday at Cormorant. Don't know what you mean by the neighborhood? The roads are a little rough, but the neighborhood is fine.

Linda,

Paula is referring to the housing project nearby. This is one of the things we are interested in seeing for ourselves. The project is built in the area where Paula used to live at Granada del Mar. She spent many fun days at Pelican Cove snorkeling and lounging around back then. We've heard about a wall built around the area and all sorts of things so we are curious to see what the area really is like.

What do they do on Trivia night at Hibiscus?

I didn't even know there was a project nearby! As I said, the road is a little rough, but I've never seen anything out of the ordinary and I go back there to the beach at least once a week.

We play Trivial Pursuit every Monday from 7:30 - 9:30. People sit in teams(each team has a name), usually 4 or more people -- very casual. The moderator reads questions in bunches of 6. Each team confers and then writes down their answers to each question. The moderator picks up the questions, scores them and then announces the answers and each team's score. Iit's slow enough to allow eating, drinking and socializing.

At the end she announces the winners, we all cheer and go home. No prizes, just a pleasant evening. The Cormorant makes money on the food and drink and pays the moderator. The moderator uses all the versions of TP and selects the questions ahead of time.

When we first came on island last fall it was the way we met folks.
