I am staying in St. Thomas but taking the ferry to Tortola and staying the night at the Jolly Roger. I heard there is a beach close by called Smugglers Cove. Does anybody know if it is within walking distance from the Jolly Roger and some opinions of the beach. THANK YOU
Smugglers Cove is an incredible beach. There is a "bar" there and usually a local "vendor" or 2 that will sell you a cold one. The beach looks out at JVD. There are reefs on either side of the cove - the coral is not in the greatest shape - and a beautiful sand-bottom area extending into the center of the bay. It is one of our favorite beaches in all the VIs.
Walking there from Sopers Hole...aka West End...where Jolly Roger is located would be very difficult. There is a huge hill between the two and walking around the hill along the coast would be an extended affair (if possible). I'd recommend a car for a day (or an afternoon) and drive over there. You could check out some of the Apple Bay haunts on the way by.
The road to Smugglers is not in good shape so I don't know if taxi's gothere or not - they certainly aren't around in great numbers so I'd think a car/jeep rental would be best.
Smugglers Cove is UNFORTUNATLY one of the favorites of the cruise ship passengers arriving on Tortola. So be sure to check the impact days when a ship arrives. That also means that there is regular taxi service from Road Town to Smugglers Cove. I'm sure taxis could be arranged from Sopers Hole as well.
Smugglers Cove, in my opinion, is the nicest beach on Tortola.
I suggest taking a taxi to Smugglers Cove from the Jolly Rodger. We spent 2 weeks on Tortola this May and we did see people walking on the road from the JR to Smugglers Cove but it's not an easy walk at all. IMHO Smuggler's Cove is indeed the nicest beach on Tortola. Don't expect good snorkeling though cause you won't find it there. It's just a really nice beach with a rather primitive Beach Bar (Where BTW, Charlie at the bar can fix you up a really good burger.) We never saw crowds people at SC.
