We will be visiting St. Thomas in February. There will be four of us and we were wondering if we should rent a car or use a taxi. I have read that it will cost at least $10 for each passenger every time we go somewhere in a taxi. We are concerned about driving on the left side of the road.

It depends on how long you'll be there and how much you'd like to explore. If you're more into relaxing and hanging out at a resort and only want to explore a day or so, a taxi might be the best way to go. You can let someone else drive and not have to worry about getting lost or damage to a rental car or gas or parking or traffic. On the other hand, if you'd like to get out and about al the time, you should certainly rent a car. And driving on the left isn't a big deal, just instruct one of the passengers to remind the driver EVERY time they turn on the ignition..KEEP LEFT!

Landwoman:

Rent a car.

Taxis charge by the passenger (each way).

When driving on the left I remind myself that my left elbow "should be pointing at the trees".

Use AAA or the Entertainment Book for discounts. For 4 people rent a full size car.

Another way to remember is "shoulder to the shoulder".

I have another question regarding driving on St. Thomas. We were there on a cruise recently and took a taxi tour. The driver told us not to drive at night if we rented a car when we came back. I would appreciate any comments or advice about driving at night. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with STT roads after dark, but I AM familar with STJ roads. I don't know why your taxi driver advised you not to drive after dark, but I know why I avoided doing so, and that's because I never knew what was around the next corner and at night it was MUCH more difficult to take evasive action! We avoided herds of goats, flocks of chickens, several horses trotting down the center of the road, a few burros AND a LOT of rental vehicles driven by tourists who'd forgotton the speed limit was 25 AND they were supposed to stay on the left side of the road. And this doesn't even include the drivers who'd had one too many rum punches! But that didn't cause us any undue hardship, we did our travelling during the day and stayed "close to our condo" at night!

sometimes it seems safer to drive the windy roads at night versus the daytime. At least at night, you usually have headlights to warn you someone is coming around the bend in your direction!

Landwoman:

We visit STT 3 or 4 times a year and always drive at night.

Of course by now we're pretty familiar with our area of STT (East End), but we started driving at night right from the beginning.

Use common sense (stay out of areas that are considered not safe at night).

You'll probably be staying in a resort area....stay in that area at night.

Besides, the taxi drivers only make money if you DON'T rent a car!
