How are the shore fishing opportunities? I will be staying at the Renaissance Grand the week of the 23 of March. Is it worth while to bring a rod/reel and a couple of lures? Are there any party or head (charge by the person) charter boats? I'm not interested in deep sea type fishing but jack, snook, etc. sounds like fun.

Jack,

There is always no harm in bringing an outfit with you. I do every time we go. I bring one of those telescoping packable spinning rods in medium weight and a 5 piece travel fly rod in 9 weight.. Here is a link to a thread from January on fishing in STT: https://www.vinow.com/wwwtalk/read.php?f=4&i=3344&t=3301.

I have not heard of head or party boats ( like here in Jersey) but do know you can get inshore guides for a few hours worth of fishing. Haven't done that either but plan to do so on our next trip in May.

Email me if you have any questions.

Patrick

Patrick,

Thanks for your reply. Where do you shore fish in the islands? and what lures do you use for spinning? There is a boat dock at the hotel I'm staying at and I wonder if its worthwhile to fish it. I live in the Chicago area and only know fresh water fishing.

I appreciate any insight you can provide.

Sincerely, Jack

Islander,

I'll be at the Renaissance Grand Beach and from the map of the property it appears that there is a sail boat dock near the dive shop.

Sincerely, Jack

Renaissance.... hummmm there is a small dock yes where the parasail boat pulls up sort of in front of their watersports booth. It is fairly close to shore - not sure how much you would catch there - but certainly you could try. Maybe you could walk along the coast on the opposite side and fish off the rocks... this way you are fishing in an area where there is less boat and people traffic and maybe more fish.
