We are planning a day trip from St. Croix to St. Thomas the week of April 26th to shop around a bit. What days are the Carnival parades scheduled that will have the shops closed or a limited amount open? We want to go when no parades are scheduled. Any help?

Hello Kerry,

There will be day time Carnival events in town on the 28th, 29th 30th and May 1st - the latter two being the parades. On the 26th the Carnival event taking place begins at 6pm.

So the 26th or 27th would be good choices. The 28th is a good choice if you want to shop in town and also catch some of the Food and Arts Fair which is the Carnival event on that date - it takes place in the Emanciptation Park.

Have a great time.

The shops will be closed May 1, and many will be closed April 30. You will likely want to wait until afternoon on Thursday the 29th, as J'ouvert that morning will last until late in the morning. I agree with Islander, that Food Fair is a great day to shop and see the town and have some terrific home-cooked delights.

Thanks for the information. The food fair day sounds great. Is Emanciptation Park within walking distance of the shops?

Hello Kerry,

Yes, very close, in fact there is shopping to be had accross the street on three sides of the Park and then about a quarter of a block away is the beginning of Main Street's shopping area.

Food fair is a bonanza of local delicacies.
Jam-packed with people and food and drink and local artisans and...
It's just YUMMY!

Hello,

Onika summed it up well. 🙂 You can read about it in our Carnival Section at

https://www.vinow.com/general_usvi/carnival/foodfair/index.php

(Note though it says in the article its held at Market Square (used to be held there)... this year its at Emanicipation Park.)

Its a big fair of food; chicken, pate, lobster, salt fish, kalaloo... deserts like coconut tarts, jams.. there is hot sauces, tamarind stew, gooseberry stew, guava tarts and jams, drinks like maubi and there are artist with crafts too. Also music.
