I know the legal limits for bringing rum back to the states, but is it possible to ship the 5 or 6 bottles back, rather than have to carry them on the flight.
Nope!
does anyone know if the rum would count as a carry-on with the airlines, or can i have a carry-on plus the box of liquor.
The travel (liquor) box can be counted as carry on, but it depends on the airline as to how many carry ons you can have. Most say one carry on and one personal item...like a purse, briefcase, etc. Might want to contact whichever airline you'll be on.
The liquor box is considered a carry on, be sure to tape the bottom of the box and make sure the handles are strong. Sometimes the check in person and/or customs will make you open the box so take tape with you and tape the handles if they are weak after checking in. (Some shops give you nice strong boxes and others are not so strong.) I took a box with me last time I traveled and the handle tore as I was walking up the steps to board the plane and my box went tumbling down the steps. 🙁 Lucky for my friends who were receiving the bottles nothing broke, but it was quite hard carrying a box with no handles!
