Hey all, wondering if anyone is in the same boat as us. We own 3 parrots, and for the past couple of years Continental has been the only airline accepting parrots in the cabin for air travel. No other airline will, and no airlines accept pets in cargo into STT airport. We're nervous that they might end that one day, leaving our poor parrots stranded. Does anyone know of any other way to get parrots to the island from the mainland?

This is a great website for you to look at:

pettravel.com

Delta seems willing to have birds as carry on--Delta flies into St Croix so I'm sure they also go to STT. If they don't, you could always fly into STX and take the seaplane/Cape Air/ferry to STT.

You may want to double-check with the airlines about checking in animals. I know many people who have checked in their animals to and from St Thomas and St Croix. We are considered domestic so all that is needed is an inter-state health certificate (at least for dogs and cats--not to sure about birds). Some airline agents are confused/uninformed and think we are international/foreign and don't know that the domestic rules apply for air travel!

We've already come up against people calling STT international, but then they backtrack and say the problem is we're a territory - and blah blah blah. A lot of the issue revolves around bird flu fears, and while I can't argue that I can say we have owned these birds for 10+ years, and always travel with a health cert. Thanks for that website, I'll check it out!

Found this today on Spirit Air!!

Pets are defined as dogs, cats and domestic birds. The number of pets allowed in the cabin is subject to space availability. A fee of $75 USD each way per pet container is charged at check-in at the airport ticket counter. Starting June 10, 2008, the fee for transporting pets is $85.00 USD. These fees cannot be prepaid prior to the day of departure.

Effective May 1, 2007- Spirit Airlines no longer accepts pets in Cargo on any Spirit Flights.

* “Effective January 8 2008 – The Free Associated State of Puerto Rico, prohibits the entry of domesticated or exotic birds to its territory (DNER)”.
