We have been advised by some to bring some frozen steaks with us when we travel as food prices on St John are very high. We don't mind doing this, but also thought about shipping the food to our villa or rental agency from the states. Does this sound reasonable or are the shipping costs going to be too costly?

Thanks!

I've only shipped non-perishables (lol, Ford parts), but I'd guess that the small amount of money you'd save by buying stuff at home you'd MORE than lose in shipping something overnight delivery.

I have seen it done by Fed Ex, but, it's really not that much more here or really worth the hassle.

Agree with Ron...too costly once you consider freight. Some other things to consider;

If you decide to send it, who's going to accept and store it?
If you plan to send it and then beat it down to STJ to accept it have you considered what happens if your flights are delayed?
If FedEx does misplace it for a day (or two) as it has been known to happen on occasion...do you really want to accept it?

Sounds like too much hassle. Carry it onboard or buy it local. 🙂

Thank you all for your input. I thought it was probably to expensive to justify shipping it, but wanted to check with others who may have tried it. We'll probaly bring a few frozen steaks, burgers and bratwurst and get our seafood in STJ. What are the good seafood markets that are trustworthy and reasonably priced, both in Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. Thanks again!

There was a lengthy exchange on this topic a few weeks ago. Search back a bit and you’ll find a huge variety of opinions and advice. Our first couple of trips we shipped ahead (the rental agency was willing to hold the cartons for us until we arrived), but it really was a bit too much of a hassle and availability of provisions on STJ has been upgraded a ton since those days.

Now we take a small softside cooler and pack it as a carryon with frozen items. Not much of a hassle and we have a nice light cooler for the beach while we’re there. Note that we don’t really do this to save money so much as the convenience of having just what we want without schlepping to the store every other day.

Thanks and I also asked about the good seafood markets that are trustworthy and reasonably priced, both in Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. Thanks for all your input.

Both Starfish Mkt. and Simple Feast have good seafood. There is a seafood store next to the Fish Trap also but the choices are limited and I have found that they are not always open. On the Coral Bay side Lily's may have fish now but they didn't when I was there in July. Actually all they had fresh at the time were cold cuts, cheeses and boneless chicken. That being said they are well stocked with many provisions. Love City Market has a good supply of everything but the fresh produce is not too good.

StarFish market has everything you need, I would not bother shipping anything.
