My wife and I are seniors who will be staying at the Ritz in St Thomas in mid Oct for a week (our first trip to STT). We will have a car and plan on mainly sight seeing, beach time, and fine dining. While we are not officially "physically handicapped", very strenuous activity, such as climbing lots of stairs or mountain climbing) would not be fun.
We would appreciate any tips on;
1) what to request in our reservation at the Ritz (which building to request, floor, what to avoid, etc.)
2) A suggested 6 day casual itinerary that covers the best of STT

Any advise is much appreciated

I can't tell you a lot about the Ritz, but on the east end there are lots of AARP possibilities. For dining near the Ritz- Robert's at the Elysian (they have a great piano bar and are within walking distance!), Blue Moon at Secret Harbour and East End Cafe in Red Hook tend to be a bit more sedate. Then if you want to drive a little further: Randy's on Raphune Hill, Old Stone Farmhouse, above town- Banana Tree Grill and Room With a View, Mafolie... then several spots in Frenchtown- Bella Blu, Craig and Sally's.

For activities: A beach tour, Coral World, shopping in town, St John by ferry for a tour and dinner, maybe a day trip to the BVI (if you are fairly good swimmers, Pirate's Penny and Stormy Petrel are great.) Make sure you leave time to just relax and plan your next trip to the VI. Some of the historic tours of town are kind of strenuous because of the hills and steps, also St John hiking trails, but other than that, you should be okay!

Hello Mike & Sue,

6 day casual itinerary that covers the best of STT. Ok lets see.

The first day you can spend at Ritz. They have two beautiful beaches there so you can spend some time at either or both. They are within a short walking distance from each other along a paved walking path. Try their restaurant for dinner or if you feel energetic you can drive downtown and try Banana Tree Grill or Room with a View.

Second day head out for a little island exploration. The rental car agency should provide you with a map. Make sure to check the cruise ship schedule; pick a day with at least one ship (some places close when there aren't any ships in port) but not too many ships so that look outs are crowded. Head out to Mountain Top, Drakes Seat, Magens Bay (you can spend a couple hours of beach time there and grab a bite to eat at their beach bar/restaurant - it isn't fancy; sandwiches, pizza etc.). If you like Ice Cream, stop at the Dairy Stand and get a milk shake when leaving the beach - they are real good. When driving away from Magens Bay the Dairy stand is at the first big corner on the left side - there is a sign. You can continue your island visit by heading past Mahagony Golf Course and out past Tutu, Estate Harmony and then down through Smith Bay - returning to Ritz through Red Hook area. You could try Blue Moon Cafe for dinner - its at Secret Harbor.

Third day - If you want to do some shopping then you can head downtown. There is a parking lot by the Fort. Souvenirs can be picked up in the Vendor Plaza, also close to the Fort. Jewelry, linens, electronics, perfume, more souvenirs can be had in the various stores that lines the streets and alleys. You can also enjoy some historical sites downtown. For a fine lunch you can head to Herve's. You can head back to Ritz by going past Havensight and through that end of the island.

Forth Day - perhaps take the Daysail trip out of Ritz for the day. Or another day trip.

Fifth Day - head to St. John. You can take the car over or if whoever is driving wants a break from driving you can take the passenger ferry and then take a taxi tour and have some beach time on St. John. If you take the car you can explore on your own and stop at a couple beaches. A full day on St. John usually makes me tired, so perhaps dinner at Ritz would be easiest or you can head to Red Hook - there are several restaurants there.

Sixth Day - You can visit a couple beaches; perhaps Coki, Sapphire or Secret Harbor.

Wow, there are so many other options. Its tough squeezing everything into 6 days. No wonder some of you guys come down every year :).

Paradise Point is a nice spot for taking in the view, if you have a car you can drive up or if you want to ride the tram you can park and ride. They have a sunset happy hour on Wednesday evenings.

If you want to snorkel you can at various beaches. You might check out the beach guides on this site to see which you'd like to go to.

A few restaurant in the line of fine dining; Room with a View, Banana Tree Grill, Craig and Sallys, Herve's, Old Stone Farmhouse - might have missed some.

Hope that gives you a start. Be sure to share with us what you do decide to do and what you thought once you get back.

Like the above mentioned...I would highly recommend taking this sail trip on the Ritz sailboat...It really was a lovely brunch for our family of 7 including my 75 year old dad...Also...they may have offer a dinner sail...not sure...

My Dads fav excursion was to the BVI....ask the concierge about taking a charter boat (either private or group...we rented a boat)and ride over to BVI...really a place to be seen...especially Jost Van Dyke..beautiful boat ride..beautiful views......about 1+++ hours or so and worth every minute...

Enjoy your trip

First - beautiful spot at the Ritz!!

Second - The restaurant at the Ritz has outrageous prices IMO. Walk over to the Elysian Resort & go to Robert's for dinner and for breakfast or lunch go to Bonnie's At The Sea - both are more reasonable than the Ritz!

A short drive away at Secret Harbor is the Blue Moon Cafe which has a wonderful view - they have a great cheesecake appetizer!!

At Red Hook - Burrito Bay Deli has great sandwiches for lunch, Molly Malone's (lunch or dinner), East End Cafe (good italian for dinner & cute restaurant), The Frigate (has fresh fish & salad bar).

Definitely go to Paradise Point for wonderview view of Charlotte Amalie harbor. Wednesday nights they are open later than sunset (at least they are in January-don't know about this time of season)

Good burgers - Shipwreck Landing at Al Cohen Mall across from Havensight (where the cruise ships dock). Next to Shipwreck is jewelry/clothing store-nice clothing, great jewelry (don't forget to bargain!!)

Have fun!

I love this site!! Very helpful and complete! Thanks to all.
Correction -- in composing my original message,I had a "senior moment" and misstated when we will be there. It's November - not October. Now all I have to do is not forget which day we leave!!

Hello Mike and Sue - We will be at Elysian Beach Resort November 5-12. I think the resort is next to the Ritz. We are in our mid-50's. Maybe we can meet. We plan on renting a car.
