I am planning a very short trip to St. Croix in January on a very tight budget. I have done the usual web search for the best deals and found a few hotels which seem affordable. I was wondering if anyone had some personal experience or opinion concerning the following hotels:
Hotel Caravelle (Christiansted)
Frederiksted Hotel (Frederiksted)
Carringtons Inn ** (Christiansted)
King Christian Hotel ** (Christiansted)
There is not a strong preference between Frederiksted or Christiansted as I will be in both during my stay. I am just looking for a clean, safe place to lay my head at night.
Thanks for your two cents,
Kenneth
I have stayed at the Caravelle. The owners are lovely and the location is excellent for strolling through C'sted. My first room was not acceptable and they promptly moved me into another room. The rooms are not fancy, but they are clean and the attitude of the owners and the staff more than make up for it.
I have also heard great things about the Carrington Inn. It is a small B&B and apparently not withing walking distance to C'sted, but well worth it.
From the list you provide I would rank in order:
1 - Caravelle. For the exact reasons that Onika mentioned. As she said, the rooms are not deluxe, but they are still very nice, clean and comfortable - their website represents the property accurately. The staff is fantastic. I've stayed there 20 times and keep going back because of the location and the staff.
2 - King Christian. Located on the waterfront near the Caravelle. Rooms are similar. The staff is fine, just not on a par with the Caravelle.
3 - Carrington's Inn. I've not stayed here, but know the location. It is about 15 minutes drive from Christiansted, much further from Frederiksted in a "residential" neighborhood of similar nice homes. Lovely view of the ocean, and enjoys an excellent reputation from those who have stayed there. The distance from anything would deter me.
4 - Frederiksted Hotel. I've not stayed here either, but Frederiksted does not offer anywhere near as much as Christiansted in terms of shopping, dining or things to do. Unfortunately, the town is also not considered quite as safe and is more run down in appearance than Christiansted.
One property you have not mentioned is the Pink Fancy in Christiansted. I have not stayed there, but it enjoys a wonderful reputation and I have never met anyone who stayed there and was not delighted, and web reviews are equally enthusiastic. It may very well be the most economical of the choices, although most of the folks I've met who stayed there could have afforded to stay elsewhere. It is slightly further from the center of town than the Caravelle and King Christian and is not on the waterfront. They do have a website: http://pinkfancy.com
Thanks for the information Onika and Joanne! Do either of you (or anyone else) have an opinion about the Club Comanche hotel in Christiansted? They were listed in one of the discount travel web sites with the cheapest rates, but only rated one star. From the map I have it is located closer to the boardwalk.
Thanks for all the input!
Kenneth
Hello Kenneth,
When I was over on St. Croix about 3-4 months ago the Comanche appeared to be in need of some TLC....
