My wife and I are coming to St Thomas/St John in mid-July. We are planning on spending a couple of days driving around St John in a Jeep and were wondering where might we find one or more secluded beaches where we could be alone mid week (Tues, Wed, Thurs). Any suggestions?

Define alone. Do you want to be the only two people on the beach, or are looking for the relative quiet of only a few other people on the beach? Pretty much any beach for which you can drive right up to it in a jeep is going to have a few people, except for Lameshur which is more of a hit and miss for people depending on time of day.

Hi, Bill!

Thanks for responding. We don't mind a bit of a hike if it will ensure us some privacy. We also don't mind if there are one or two other people, but we are more adventurous than most and are looking for something less ordinary. We really like Little Magen's on STT and are of that ilk. Any ideas?

We like Honeymoon Beach. It's a hike down to the beach but well worth it. If you go to the visitor's center when you get over to St. John they can give you the best directions. There was no one else on the beach when we were there. There was some great snorkeling off to the left.

One beach that I discovered recently is at Brown Bay. It is a bit of a hike in, and trail head is far enough out that it seems to be normally empty. The trailhead is a little east of Coral Bay on Rte. 10. It is along a National Park trail and information should be available at the NPS information building and in a couple of the hiking books for the island. I think that Lameshur is usually pretty quiet this time of year.

In addition to Honeymoon, Solomon bay is not accessible by car so there usually aren't many people there. It's also one of the prettiest IMHO.

The further you go from Cruz Bay, ther fewer people you'll have to share the beach with. And any beach that requires walking further thins out the population----we went to Haulover last year and found a number of people on the south side, but not one on the north side, which requires a 5 minute walk. The exception to this thinning-by-walking rule is Waterlemon. It's become identified as the best place to snorkel, so a lot of daysails go there. Also, if you get to any beach early, you'll have it to yourself for a while. And on STJ, even a "crowded" beach (except for Trunk), is fairly unoccupied by the standards of many other places.

Brown Bay can also be reached by a cutoff from the Johnny Horn Trail, which runs from Waterlemon Bay over to Coral Bay. Good chance that you'd be completely alone there.

You could also start out at a more populated beach and snorkel around "the point" to find a more secluded spot.

Jumbie to Denis
Salt Pond, out toward Ram Head
Haulover North, out toward the east

Thanks for your information! When I first read Haulover, I thought you were talking about Haulover in North Miami Beach...LOL...one of our favorites also.
