The Fish Trap (downtown Cruz Bay in the Raintree Court) is a restaurant and a fresh fish market. I know that they had closed for a while but I believe I read in the St. John's Times newsletter that they have just re-opened. The Starfish Market has seafood too. Good Luck!

There is a fisherman that sets up next to natures nook and will have tuna and mahi

I like to buy from the local next to Nature's Nook. There's another one in Coral Bay across from Crabby's. The mahi, tuna and wahoo are very nice.

Cheers, RickG

RickG or whoever...

Any idea where these locals are procuring their fish, and how fresh it is? Maybe this should be obvious based on the type of fish, but I'm afraid I don't know enough about it, sorry if that's a stupid question.

There is always the discussion of avoiding reef fish with the cig_something_or_other, are these caught further out? Also, I assume it would be cash only, any guidance on pricing? It'll just be 2 of us. Want to be sure to bring enough cash but if we ended up purchasing fish several times it could add up.

FWIW - we purchased fish at Starfish one trip and were very disappointed, it must've been sitting there for days and was barely edible. We'd like to get some but don't want to repeat that experience.

Hi there - we leave for STJ on the 14th also!! I agree with some of the above post - we have always bought our fish from the dude beside Natures Nook and also the Fish Trap - be safe - always get what you KNOW - it wouldn't be the time to try something funky. Yes, the islanders are known for eating certain types of fish that we, as tourist, have no business trying to learn to prepare. A lot of those type fish EAT coral and I don't want to be eating coral, ya know. Its a great way to get really, really sick! Although, we do spear fish with the locals - talk about some awesome fresh fish on the grill - anyway, the key to trying those 'other' type of fish is, as soon a you catch them, gut them and ice them - ASAP! I'm still a chicken though!

There are no fresh shrimp or crabs here- they are frozen and flown in.
