We will be in Saint Thomas a week from today! I am so excited. Last time we were there we rented a jeep for the week. My husband is wanting to rent a scooter instead because it will be a little more cost efficient. I was wondering what anyone's thoughts were about renting a scooter in Saint Thomas and taking it to Saint John for a day. Thanks so much for your input.

Ashley

I have to admit the scooters look fun, but you have to be comfortable driving on the left, and driving on our island. The flat roads in town aren't so bad, but once you start climbing I feel like it could be a little hairy. Just my opinion.

Not really advisable because of the twisting turning roads, steep hills, limited visibility (particularly for cars coming up on you from behind,) slick surfaces when raining and absolutely NOT at night. for all the aforementioned reasons along with limited street lighting. I'm not sure you're even allowed to take rental scooters over to STJ. Stay safe and rent a car! Cheers!

My wife and I have rented scooters on STJ and it was fun. The drawbacks are: 1) that you have to be much more aware of the other sightseers driving cars and not watching the road. 2) you have to watch the road better than if in a 4 wheeled vehicle to avoid potholes, gravel, and rocks; thus missing out on alot of the scenery. I think we will rent the Jeep soft top next time. It would give you the openness and free feeling, but without the dangers. Just my opinion. Also, you won't be afraid to have a burger and a cold one(or 2) at Skinny Leg's.

It's dangerous enough around my neighborhood with our scooter. I would never rent one in STT. It's just not worth it. Too dangerous IMO.

Ashley:

Rent a car.

Your lives are worth more than saving a couple of dollars.

one word: Don't.

I have eye witnessed tourists wiping out on those things. (you don't see anyone who lives here with those things) How much can you possibly save? The jeep wrangler is the way to go--fun and safe. Don't rent your vehicle at the airport as it is automatically another $11 per day.

When I see people (I'm assuming tourists) on them down in STT, I cringe. The roads are just not suited for moped rentals. Don't do it..not worth the chance.

I think that when people go on vacation, they like adventure. If you have that type of nature, keep in mind that you will have to be extra vigilant for drivers, truckers and other vacationers. There are a lot of blind curves, steep hills and hairpins. Personally, I would not ride one, and when I see them I get very nervous because it's been my experience that they are trying to enjoy the ride and are not being good drivers. I've seen scooter riders slow down and circle around, trying not to lose the less intrepid among them but causing a hazard to oncoming traffic for 3 ways around. I've seen them lose control of them and have to stop suddenly.

You may turn out to be the exception, and I am not trying to mash up those scooter rentals - we all need to earn a living - but on an island this hilly, I think one should visit here first and rent a car. Then try a scooter next time around.
