Very good question, and I'm hoping a local has tested this. My brother in law is bringing his portable Sirius when he visits me in September to test it out.

According to Sirius they do not offer coverage down here. From what I have heard from friends that own a Satellite TV compaany down here, all of the Satellites signal strength is pointed at the mainland for obvious reason so the signal is weak at best down here. Which is why we have to have 6' Sat in our yard to if we want to pickup any usable Sat signal.

If you had a 6' dish I bet you could pick up Sirius, but I'm hoping that somehow there is enough signal to get something through since our 3 radio stations worth listening too get old quickly.

If any local or tourist has ever tested the signal with a portable let me know.

StuScott,

Thanks, I'd be real interested if you brother-in-laws test, I'd hate to drag a 6' dish to the beach 🙂

Anyone else try this????

I don't know about Sirius, but my uncle tried out XM Radio and it didn't work. I wouldn't be surprised if Sirius didn't work. However, one can listen to Sirius through their satellite TV, but if you're a visitor, you probably wouldn't have access to that.

hello, on island time, I also have sirius, and have spoken with others who have satellite radio. none have worked at all, in the usvi. also, sirius informed me that their signal only extends maybe 200 miles off the mainland coast. also there are no immediate plans to extend signals to the caribbean.

I've brought my Sirius to STJ for the past two years and it worked just fine. I stayed at villas on Ajax Peak, up Bordeaux Mt. Rd. and one villa out past Salt Pond and had no problems. We bring the house antena and face it Northwest to pick up the signal, and we run it through the stereo in the villa. Sirius can only claim their signal is good for 200 miles off the mainland because of FCC regulations I believe. A friend of mine took hers on a cruise through the Panama Canal and it worked. Take it with you! My hubby and I both think it's well worth it.

kool, islandtime if you take it with you could you please let us know if it worked. I hate the thought of giving up satellite radio. it would be like going from high-speed back to dial-up
Thanx in advance

Got to agree there ironman - sat radio rules big time. Cant listen to regular radio anymore - cant believe I had to listen to that crap for all these years (current rock radio in NJ/NY area blows big time).
Yes it does suck "paying for radio", but if you are any kind of music fan and like to be challenged by what you hear and getting turned on to different artists and tunes and can listen a lot in the car or in a home office/telecommuting situation, it is well worth the $$. Faves on Sirius include The Spectrum and The Underground Garage and of course Margaritaville. Plus you got Howard if you are in the mood.

Jofus,

Did you only use it in the villa or did you take it with you to the beach, pool, car et. Also did you have a good clear view to the NW, I'm guessing you may have had the antena low on the horizon in order to get the signal (?). Our resort (Elysian) faces more to the south. I'd hate to give up luggage/carry on space if we can't use it.

Thanks

I did have good nw clearance in all cases. Didn't take it to the beach, car was spotty reception. One villa I stayed at was on the south shore but the hills were far enough away that i got a good signal.

Anyone have experience with XM on STJ? We are going in a couple of weeks and are staying on Great Cruz Bay. Hate to be with sattelite, but don't want to take up extra room if it's not going to work. Thanks
