Hello Paul,

It is over rocks, pretty shallow - 4 feet to maybe 9 feet. If you go out further then its deeper. I have snorkeled all the way out to the little island - its quite a swim, the current gets strong. I prefer to stay around the coast rather then going out that way. Never saw rays or turtles there. You might see rays at Cinnamon Bay if you go there to St. John. Also might enjoy snorkeling and feeding fish at Coki Beach on St. Thomas. I have snorkeled in reef areas that were protected from too many visitors, and from fishing so were filled filled filled with fish -so I am a bit spoiled when it comes to comparing. I think Sapphire is fair to good. Others think its real good. Coki is good because the fish are there in greater number. A good idea if you can do it is to take a snorkeling charter and go out to one of the little cays rocky outcrops in the ocean around the islands - great snorkeling because it doesn't get as much people traffic as beach side snorkeling.

Have a great time. Paul when you come back I expect a trip report. 🙂 🙂
all about how your trip matched up the brick laying and thinking and more thinking that you are doing. 🙂

Paul: I have to say, your posts are a joy! In your planning, think about going to Coral World early in your trip. You can get a very good idea of what all the stuff looks like in the wild, then spend your time snorkeling and looking! Turtles and rays are generally in areas with turtle grass and sand (the rays eat stuff that is in the sand). Look at Secret Harbour, Hull Bay, Brewer's Bay, and Magen's. On St John: Hawksnest and Maho/Francis, Leinster and the south shore beaches. All of the stuff in the water is cool!

in reding your suggestions,i will definately take a boat trip out to snorkel..all the other places ive been, youve had to do that,so the idea that theres good snorkeling right off the beach has a little sparkle in my eyes..as far as st.john,i definately will be there a couple of times,i actually wanted to stay there, but chose st.thomas for the convienience,1 year olds can be demanding, and after a 4 hour flight from new york,he will be ready to relax,so waiting on the ferry then getting to your place..tooo much on the little guy..but im sure he will be swimming in trunk bay with me the next day..lol
