I heard from some friends that were in STT in May that the Sapphire Beach Resort has closed. Is this true? They stayed up on the hill side where I guess it's different ownership than the actual Hotel. They said the pool out by the little peninsula was brown and dirty with ducks swimming in it. The bar in the actual hotel was closed up as was the rental shop. Does anyone know if in fact they are closed? We are heading back in Feb. and had hoped to stay there one night before heading to Jost on the ferry the next morning. With the timing of our flight we'd never make it to Jost the same day and thought we'd stay at Sapphire because of the convenience to Red Hook. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Jill

It is not closed, but there is no food being served, no bar, nothing. It looks as if they are continuing to maintain the resort grounds (still very pretty) and the beach was busy when I visited last week. But, again, nothing is being served so bring your own and plan to eat out and grocery shop for drinks/snacks to keep in your room. Also, the Sapphire Village buildings (above the resort) are getting new faces and those that have already been completed look MUCH better!

I haven't checked Sapphire's rates. I wonder if they're still charging full price since they now lack amenities. The chairs and tables around the pool dining are have all been cleared out. There were lounge chairs around the pool.

Re: ducks in the pool, that was ALWAYS the case with Sapphire - ick! My family and others we met at SApphire Resort on a trip a few years back all had to get prescriptions for ear infections and we all think it was due to the dirty pool. Even before we got our script filled, others at the resort who had swam with heads underwater at Sapphire and gotten infections shared their meds with us since they had just gotten scripts for the same thing and we were all in such pain. I have told this story before and always get flamed because people say I cannot prove that this was Sapphire's fault (I am not trying to prove it, nor ask anything of Sapphire - I am simply stating what happened to us and my opinion of how it happened), but how many people who go under water in a pool need to get sick before we can put 2+2 together? Anyway, we flew home a few days later and had to hear straight to the hospital's ER to get straightened out. It was not swimmers ear - it was infection. Ducks swim in the pool and if you look in the corners of the pool, you may see the green and bubbly stuff floating there that I saw when I looked.

I love Sapphire's beach - but I cannot stay there with my daughter becuase she would want to swim in the pool and I wouldn't let her - so that wouldn't be any fun.

I can believe this Bluwater, I hardly every go into the pool anywhere unless I just wade in. Nor do I get into the whirlpool or hot tub outside of any resort. My husband did this last June & came home double over with an bladder infection which the doctor said it was from the whirlpool. He was off from work two weeks & had to have several types of antibiotics to get rid of the infection. And no he wasn't sick before he went, just had a company physical before one week & got a clean bill of health.

Hey Bluewater...do you hear anything about Spphire beach reopening??? I always stay at Crystal cove next door. I hear it's like a Ghost Town at the resort. I'll be there in Feb. for 2 weeks and I sure will miss the Sunday Beach party and the restaurants next door. I've been going down there since 1991 and have seen many owners and managers come and go at the resort. For some reason no one can seem to make a go of it there. I also heard that the restaurant up the hill at Sapphire Village is also closed.....is that true? Jimbo

The old restaurant at Sapphire Village (Azure) is closed. A new restaurant (Grapevine Grille) has opened in its place. I wrote a review under a thread on Sapphire Beach a couple of weeks ago. As I understand it (and I am not in the loop at all) the problem at Sapphire Beach is between the homeowner's association and the former developer of the property who have some issues.

James, the resort is not closed, as far as I know - just the dining and bar amenities have closed. I'm sure this is creating a drop in their numbers. Their full service restaurant was never any good...no matter how many different things they tried to improve it over the years. The grill by the pool was good for sandwiches, etc...and the bars were good for drinks. I wonder where the bartenders have gone....Sapphire had consistency with good bartenders at the beach bar.

I really wish things would improve at Sapphire - service, cleanliness, amenities. It is a shame to run such a prime location into the ground.

The resort is open, but the restaurant and bar are most likely going to be closed indefinitely. There is talk of bringing grills and food stands to the beach to serve some food and beverages.

Well, that would explain why we got such a great rate quoted for the week of Christmas! I really want to go, but don't know if I am that adventurous. 🙂

Sapphire is close to Red Hook and the Grapevine Grille is pretty good.

What is "close"? A five minute walk? Uphill both ways? I am by nature a lazy person. As Janean Garafolo would say, I'm a "would you start my orange" kind of person.

My other dilema is this, if we arrive on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, how hard will it be to find "provisions"? The thought of packing a suitcase full of groceries makes me sad.

You will find provisons. Don't know of any grocery store these days that close on holidays. You should rent a car as well.

Hello,

Sapphire Beach; was there a couple weeks ago and the gift shop (its beachfront, on the left when facing the water, next to where the restaurant space is) carries sodas, water, beer and an assortment of snacks, even frozen pizzas and have a microwave for cooking it; should you be visiting the beach for the day and looking for something to eat/drink. The watersports rental booth was open and had kayaks, windsurfing, diving, para-sailing, jet skis etc. their regular lineup.

Richmond - Sapphire is a little over .5 miles from Red Hook and yes its uphill, then downhill with no sidewalks... takes about 2 minutes to drive it - so Sapphire is a quick drive from several restaurants. As Ronnie pointed out the large grocery stores are usually open on the holidays.
