My friend, an owner at Sapphire, reports that Sapphire Beach Bars are Open!

The restaurants are scheduled to be open in about 2-3 weeks.

I hope the Sunday Beach Parties resume.

Great news, hopefully it will bring new life to the resort, especially if the Sunday beach party returns and brings all the locals and tourist back. Very very good news

All:

My friend (who is currently there) has reported that the restaurant, adjacent to the bar, is now open!

Also, the cruise ship crowd is returning to Sapphire Beach.

Any idea what the best way to get on as a bartender in one of these places is? Is your owner friend doing any hiring? I've been bartending for years and have dreamed of making my way down to the islands. Florida just isn't quite cutting it for me. 🙂

Matt:

I suggest that you show up in person.

My friend only owns a condo unit at Sapphire Beach.

Matt, if you're down in Florida now, you should make a trip down. While you're down there, make your way around to some of the bars and restaurants in Red Hook.

My friends nephew and his wife (they're in their 20s), honeymooned on STJ and within 1 1/2 years they were down living on St. Thomas. They rent at Sapphire and they love it!

Also, go to the relocation board. There's alot of suggestions over there about the pros and cons of moving down to the islands.

Whatever you do, good luck to you. Wish I was younger so I could of had the same options.

The barttender at Sapphire is a newbie and had a VERY difficult time working it last Sunday for the beach party. He was "solo" with no back-up and managed to come through relatvely unscathed but the new operators didn't order enough booze, They quickly ran out of several beers and basic liquor. He also had a hard time understanding local vernacular where drink orders were concerned. Hopefully the new owners will quickly realize the necessity for major stocking before the local clientel and provide bar back-ups for the Sundays.

Matt, invest in a PMV! And go to the relocation forum to do research on moving here. The newbie attrition rate is very high. Cheers!

Sounds great! I may just get down there and wing it. I think I could find a job fairly quickly if they were available. I've put a lot of effort into becoming really good(tough, I know, serve drinks and flirt all night). Although the local vernacular vould possibly prove to be a problem for me as well. Thanks for all the info, though. I will definitely follow it.

Had lunch late last week at the new restaurant and the food was pretty good. I did ask if they were open for breakfast as well and they said not at this time . I'll be back down in a couple of weeks and will probably try it again .

Sandy,

The restaurant at Sapphire Village is now called the Grape Vine Grill and has been open continuously since Sept. 2006. It was only closed for about 2 months due to an ownership change (was the Azure). Regards,

I spoke to the owner of the Sapphire Resort restaurant (the one by the front door and the bar) and he hopes to expand his menus and to open for dinner sometime before prime season. Early reviews on the lunch were mixed. Some good, some bad. I think he needs time to work out the problems.
