Altho maybe off-topic of the USVI, many are very familiar with Sandy Cay ...

http://www.bviplatinum.com/news/?page=article&aid=3303

Ladies and gentlemen, I am therefore pleased to announce that the Executors of the Estate of the late Laurance S. Rockefeller have confirmed their intention to transfer Sandy Cay to the BVI Government under the management of the BVI National Parks Trust as a permanent protected area.

I am also pleased to report that the formal transfer of Sandy Cay to the people of the Virgin Islands will be complete within the next 6 months, after the remaining details are finalized.

For almost four decades Mr. Rockefeller personally owned and managed Sandy Cay, which is a 14-acre undeveloped island located between Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. He maintained the island very much like a small park that was opened to visitors who arrived by boat.

it continues ...
When the transfer is finalized, Sandy Cay will be preserved as a combination botanic garden, nature reserve, and low-key recreational area. This will add an important dimension to the BVI’s overall tourism product as an attraction for eco-tourists because over the years, Sandy Cay has become a popular spot for day-trippers.

Good news. Though, I guess I was mistaken in assuming that Sandy Cay and Sandy Spit were one in the same. Certainly, the island I was on, which we callled Sandy Cay, did not seem like it was 14 acres....unless the part under the water is also counted.

Is Sandy Cay different from Sandy Spit?

Sandy Spit is just south of Green Cay and is within "spittin' distance" of Jost Van Dyke and Sandy Cay.
Now if I only knew how to post pictures!

Yes Blu, that picture you posted is of Sandy Spit. Was there and took some photos for our Christmas cards this year in June. Sandy Cay is over a bit further from the Spit, and has the distinction of being the place where the theme and opening cridits for Gilligan's Island were filmed.

That's my story, and I'm stickin to it!

OK, sothe photo I've posted is of the Spit, which I've visited...but this is not the Cay. I get it now. Thanks!

All this time. I thought I'd been to the Cay.

on old sailing charts you will see Sandy Spit labeled as Sandy Split. . . .as it split from Jost van Dyke. As a charter boat captain I can only admit to telling guests that they filmed the original Corona Commercial on the island. Not 100% on the validity but certainly plausible enough to provide harmless entertainment. I had been correct in telling people Sandy Cay was owned by the Rocks.
