Is the drive out to Salt Pond worth it?
Salt Pond STJ?? Yes - especially if the North Swell is up - like today !! and you want to snorkel or enjoy calm water - the hike over to Drunk Bay is very nice - the Rams Head Hike , well worth the effort - blue cobblestone beach is a great stop off - the walk up and back to your car from the Salt Pond Beach is about 10 min. and a gentle grade - wear sandals or shoes and bring water -- no facilities - very little shade.
Driving out to Salt Pond is a very nice scenic drive. Once there it's a short hike down to Salt Pond Bay (~ 3/4 mile I'd guess). Going down it's a down hill hike and easy but the trip back will leave you huffing and puffing. Bring lots of water as it's hot and not much shade down there. The snorkeling way out by the rock in the middle of the bay is really really great but it's a looooong swim out there but worth it.
If you're the "outdoorsy" type, yes, definitely an adventure. If you're just looking for another great beach, probably not. . .
You're right about that, teacher. The beach itself at Salt Pond isn't the soft white sand that you'll find at the northshore beaches. It's more course with pebble at the edges. It's more of an adventure kind of destination where you'd go for the snorkling and the hike.
Not one of the picturesque beaches compared to the North Shore but certainly worth the visit for snorkeling or hiking and the beach is decent. The Salt Pond is more like Leinster Bay than Maho/Frances if that helps. Don't bring a lot to carry for while the walk is not as much a hike as that for Waterlemon the up grade walk back to the car will be a bummer.
Don't forget to stop at the Tourist Trap for a few drinks and certainly enjoy the ride out along Coral Bay. The views make the trip worth it for us and we usually visit the Lameshur Bays afterward to fill out the day.
