I visited St. Thomas 2 years ago and loved it. The only problem was there were several warnings on this post as to safety on St. Thomas. Just wondering if the crime problem has improved. Just want to check this out before making plans to come again.

Crime could be up. Crime could be down. The bottom Line: Use common sense. If you are out late at night, stick with a group. Take a taxi home. Stay in well-lighted areas and don't go into areas that don't look inviting. Don't go looking for or attempting to purchase illegal substances. Pretty much the same rules apply in the VI that apply where you live when you're not on vacation. Seriously.

Gail:

I see a long message trail coming.........

In a few words....it's safe on STT, STX & STJ.

I second FLBI's statement above.....if you look for trouble you'll find it. If you practice common sense and don't get stoned drunk and hitch hike back to your place (or accept a ride from a complete stranger) then you'll be fine.

I haven't seen any evidence that there's trouble in Paradise lately. I don't subscribe to the "don't go looking for trouble and it won't find you" school of thought. I believe bad can things happen to good people. That being said, thing appear to be relatively quiet.

Knock wood!!!

Spent most nights eating in Red Hook & Iggies....never felt unsafe. Parked in the well lighted underground garage in Red Hook ( Next to Maggie Malones). Just treat it like any city with lots of tourists, stay in well lit areas with people around.

the only time I felt unsafe was in the car! 🙂 seriously tho, traveling those roads were the only time my heart skipped a beat.

but, we must be getting older because we didn't stay out partying late. We were awake at 6:00 am and asleep by 11:00!

Mountaineer Girl,
We need to get together. Hubby & I were on that same schedule on our vacation & you are a Chesney fan also! Let me know about your concert. We are still trying to get tickets to Philly from our sources 🙂 & have MD ones but that isn't until August.

I guess I should have been more specific when I asked about the safety of St. Thomas. I'm not looking for trouble at all and try to be very cautious with the things you mentioned. What I was talking about was two years ago there was a problem with armed robberies at resorts (specifically at hotels at night on beaches). I don't think those people were looking for trouble in taking a walk on the beach at night. I have never had a problem with walking on beaches in the states and being held up by someone with a gun or knife. I just hope that this situation has resolved itself. We were almost afraid to go out of our room at night after reading the posts on this board. The posts had links to the island police reports so they were not made up. That is what I was trying to ask about safety.

Mountaineer...we really need to get together :o)

We're just like you..up at 6 or earlier and in bed by 11.

Yep...those roads at night can be scarey. I didn't drive, but i think sometimes it's tougher on the back seat passengers.

I never felt threatened or scared on St. Thomas. I have nothing but positive things to say about going and being with the locals.

Gail...know to what you were referencing. Resort robberies on STT at 3 resorts and villas on STJ.

That was then.....all is quiet since. Things have been quiet! Thanks goodness.

Been ging there now for the past 14 years and never had a problem. I guess the worst was when I was propositioned in town by a guy to meet him at little Magens for a little "sumpin sumpin" I guess. Lol! Thanks but no thanks. Not my cup of tea.

Gail - I just stayed at the resort you referenced, and believe me, that HAD to be a freak thing. Felt totally safe there at all times. Our maid (who was from Domica) had her 2 boys there because they were out of school for some reason, and they hung out on the beach (basically unattended) most of the day. no problems. I really don't think safety is a concern especially when hanging out at your resort. As others have stated - don't go walking around late at night while intoxicated or otherwise using poor judgement.

connie and cocosmom - I hear ya! and yes I will let you know about the KC concert!
