Hello,

My mom and sister just got back from STT and were saying that they had planned to go to Smith Bay but were told not to b/c of recent unsafe incidences occurring there. Anyone know what has happened? I really wanted to go there on our trip in June.

Sorry, I should have been specific. Safety on Lindquist Beach.

We have a condo in Smith Bay at Pineapple Village and I feel safe when I'm there. Point Pleasant and the Wyndham are also close to there as well as the ever popular Coki Beach. With that said, I wouldn't go wandering around at night by myself in town. The resorts and condo properties all are gated and have guards on staff at all times to keep the intruders at bay. Crime does happen on the island just like it happens stateside, just use common sense and you'll be fine.

Smith Bay Estate is a very large area which includes Red Hook (which most don't know.) It is as safe as any area of STT but gets a bad reputation because of one small area which, although populated by very nice law-abiding people, is a drug haven late at night and is a scourge to all of the aforementioned law-abiding people who live and work in Smith Bay (me included!) who continuously hear that it's an area to be avoided.

Late at night and very early in the morning there are countless areas of STT where you shouldn't be unless you're looking for trouble, i.e. trying to find drugs or wandering around on foot buzzed and stupid, but that little pocket area in Smith Bay is only one of many similar pockets all over the island and, apologies if need be that I get feisty on the subject, but I get tired of hearing that Smith Bay is "dangerous" period. I wouldn't still live and have my business in Smith Bay for 13 years now if it were the rat-hole that some ignoramuses depict it to be.

Cheers!!

My family has a condo on Sapphire and I am well aware of when and were to be to avoid the riff raff. I am asking specifically about Lindquist beach. My sister and mother wanted to spend the early afternoon on the beach there and were warned not to. I know that it is currently going through a transition to be apart of the vi national park, so I didn't know if there is still a lot of riff raff going on at that specific beach.

You amended your post before I posted a reply but I can assure you that Lindqvist Beach (now renamed Smith Bay Park) is perfectly safe. Yes, there were some very late-night incidents there when it was privately owned but the Magens Bay Authority has now taken over management of the beach since it was purchased by the VI Government a couple of years ago and basic facilities there continue to be put in place with lifeguards, security personnel, toilet facilities and more to come.

The crimes there weren't during the daytime anyway. As best as I recall in the last 10 years, two rapes took place there late at night and one murder victim was found there with the latter a poor paranoid schizophrenic lady who was basically homeless and never harmed anyone but obviously ticked of somebody who shot her there. Enough said! Cheers!

Our posts overlapped again but, for the sake of good order, the current MBA management has nothing to do with the Federal National Park.

I have found Lindqvist Beach , Smith Bay park to be extremely safe and well controlled since Magens Bay authority has been in charge - any time during daylight hours for sure. Many visits and it truly is a jewel in the VI!

I live next to Linquest and I can say that since Megan's has taken over it is much, much safer. Remember that if you are at a place at the wrong time than you should get out.

Enjoy it while you can. I don't agree that it should be made into a Megan's circus but I do like the security.

Never had a problem at this beach. It's beautiful and well worth a day trip there.

Hello Ryn1,

Is it possible your mom and sister asked about Smith Bay and not Lindquist; like others have mentioned Smith Bay covers a big area but in general gets a bad rep because of a small area's seediness. If that wasn't the case than perhaps the person they spoke with has not visited Lindquist since the Magens Bay Authority took over and were unaware of the changes. Prior to Magens Bay Authority adding the lifeguards and having security check in, there had been safety issues during the day; and the general consensus was to beware, go with a group, go during the weekend when there were more people on the beach or don't go. Security has however improved.

There was a time when I wouldn't have recommended it, but that time is no longer! There is always someone there if the gate is open. No vehicles are allowed after 5 pm, so you are good until that time! I did a wedding there just the other day, late afternoon and it was beautiful! This beach is very quiet and this too is very nice! Go and enjoy yourself! (tu)
