Trying to figure out a logistical problem. We are renting a soft top jeep on STT and taking the barge to STJ. Probably get to STJ about 5 PM. We are trying to figure out a way that we can have dinner in Cruz Bay before going to our villa wich is on the other side of the island. We will have been flying all night and probably won't want to cook. I'm not comfortable leaving a soft top jeep full of all of our luggage parked on the street while we go into a restaurant. Thought about going to the villa and then heading to Coral Bay for dinner but we will have an extremely tired 5 year old on our hands and would like to put him to bed as early as possible.

Any ideas on a safe place to leave luggage, or park the car that would be safe? I guess the other idea would be to get some carry out in Cruz Bay. Any suggestions of a quick convenient place to do that? We will probably pick up some groceries. Do any of the stores have a good deli?

Thanks for the help!

Hello Dale,

Picking up some food to go might be your best bet considering the little one and the luggage and being tired from flying.

Simple Feast, close to Westin, has a good deli. 🙂

Any other suggestions for good 'to go' options in Cruz Bay?

Can I ask where you rented the Jeep at the airport?

Thanks

We are renting from Dependible Car Rental. They are not at the airport but come and get you there.

You should have no problem as long as the jeep is covered. Cruz Bay is very very safe. Just shut the doors and put the top up. Your safe.

No worried - STJ is not like STT as far as that is concerned.

Westin is in Great Cruz Bay. Take the south road out of Cruz Bay past Starfish Market (not sure of road name).

Uncle Joe's BBQ (across from the post office) is very good for take out.

I'm not sure I can completely concur with you Grinder. While I agree that the odds of having your luggage stolen from a parked car is greater on St. Thomas than on St. John, it really is a matter of where you park. I can think of some spots in Cruz Bay that I would worry about leaving luggage in a car.

The advice that seems pervasive is to use the same precautions in the islands that you would in the states given similar circumstances. Reading the police blotter for St. John makes one aware that theft occurs on a weekly basis, sometimes taking place in one part of a villa while the guests are in another.

Last month I had similar concerns to Dale's when leaving luggage in a hard-top Suzuki parked at the Westin while I rented a boat from Nauti-Nymph. I was in-between villas and had no place to leave the luggage. Although everything turned out alright, I don't think my concerns were unfounded given the amount of theft that occurs on St. John.

Thanks Richard. I usually weigh the consequences of something happening with the risk. Maybe the risk isn't that great but the consequences of having all of our luggage stolen on our first day would be devestating. I wouldn't enjoy our dinner much worrying about it. We have decided to go with take out that first night. We will have plenty of other chances to eat out.

Is Uncle Joes BBQ convenient as far as time (will we have to wait long for food?), parking, etc?
Do either of the grocery stores have delis? We will be stopping to pick up a few things before heading to the house.

Any other take out suggestins?

Dale,

Parking and convenience are diametrically opposed concepts in Cruz Bay. Given your circumstances I would head directly to StarFish Market where parking is rarely a problem. They have prepared dishes behind a glass counter as well as pre-made sandwiches. There is also a deli on the 3rd floor called Baked in The Sun. Another option would be to stop at Pastory Gardens for dinner, which is on the way to Coral Bay on Centerline Road ( http://www.pastorygardens.com/). Parking won't be a problem and you can ask to be seated on the balcony where you can keep an eye on your car (although here I think you'd even have less to worry about possible theft).

Thanks. Baked in the Sun sounds like a good solution. Pastory Gardens sounds good too except for the most likely very tired and cranky 5 year old we will have with us. We will be traveling all night and day. Doesn't make for being very rested.

2 weeks to go!

What is the name of the deli out past the Westin on the way to Chocolate Hole? They have an awesome selection of meats, cheeses and wines not readily available at Starfish. I seem to remember something like Sunshine Foods or similar. They are on the bottom of a 2 story building.

Do you happen to know what time Baked in the Sun is open to on weekdays. We might not get to Cruz Bay until 5:30 or 6.

Sounds like you're staying somewhere toward Coral Bay. You could stop for take-out barbecue at Sticky Fingers. Loads of parking, less wait time than Uncle Joe's.

The deli on the way to the Westin is Simple Feast. I don't think that Baked in the Sun is open that late. It opens early in the morning. Dolphin Market across from the Texaco station also has a deli. If you go to Joe's BBQ you can park in the lot near them. There is now a 45 min. parking limit there so parking should not be a problem. Pastory Gardens is not a bad idea. It's very informal and the service is good. You might even ask them if you can take out.
