What route should I take on the northside to avoid going thru town?
Whoever you're renting from will give you a map and directions.
We rented a car from E-Z Car Rental which was near our resort, they had a special running for Oct & Nov, they picked us up at our resort and gave us 2 maps with highlighted routes and then at the end of the week when we returned our car they brought us back to our resort. There are a couple routes you can take from the airport to Red Hook, but they had 21" of rain 2 weeks ago and some of the roads are in rough shape, Rt 30 to Rt 38 to Rt 32 or once you get to Rt. 38 you can just stay on that. Have a good time!

The OP wants to avoid town (probably arriving just in time to go through there during the evening commuter traffic) so wants to go over the mountain. Routes 32 and 38 entail going through town but the OP will hook into 38 via the more circuitous northside route.
