If we take the round trip ferry ride from STT to STJ to JVD, coming back when we stop in STJ can we stay longer and take a later ferry back? Or do we need to stay on that particular ferry and it's schedule?

After you've cleared customs you're back on US territory and can do what you like - you aren't bound to continue on to STT. Have fun!

Do you happen to know if they charge more if you don't take the scheduled ferry back? We are trying to get to JVD on the most economical way possible. Don't really want to do a charter, as most include snorkeling and we are really not interested that. Would like to get out on a boat a bit, see JVD for a couple of hours, check out STJ, so I was thinking that this is the way to go.

We are taking one day of our short trip for sightseeing. So thought it might work to take the ferry, head back to STJ enjoy the town there, then head back later to STT.

Once you're back on STJ then you'd just take one of the regularly scheduled ferries back to STT. They run on the hour every hour and the fare is $6 pp (schedules and rates are linked under "Quick Links" top right this page). Your JVD round trip ferry fare won't be discounted.
