I'm planning on visiting St. Thomas the early part of June and was wondering if anybody knows anything about Rockworks villa in St. Thomas. We plan on renting a car to get around the island. Any experiences with this villa good or bad would be appreciated.

The owner is a regular contributor on this site - Sherri.

I've been there - it is awesome. I have not stayed overnight....but just visited to sample it. Ask some specific questions and I will answer as best I can.

Thanks for replying. Id like to know the cleanliness, the accessability to other beaches. We plan on renting a car and need to know how hilly it is to get to the villa and if we would need a specific type of vehicle. The pictures look so beautiful and is "what you see, what you get!! How secluded is it from other villas?

Totlly clean. I've never found a villa that wasn't clean. Sherri cleans her 2 villas herself. - and I think she might be a borderline compulsive cleaner. Sorry Sherri, but it is a good thing with villas. They ere super clean when I visitedand the fact that they are managed by Mclaughlin Anderson speaks volumes. Nancy Anderson does NOT tolerate anything less than near-perfection. I've heard villa owners call Nancy a "pain in the a*%" because she is so picky about the villas. I know owners who won't list their villas with Nancy because they don't want to jump through all of the hoops. President Clinton used one one Nancy's villas - more than once. You'll be fine with cleanliness. No doubt. Owners who want to attract the higher-end client have no problems with Nancy. She works for the owners just as hard as she works for the clients. Picky owners - picky renters! LOL 🙂

Hilly...hmmm....well, I don't recall it being that hilly, unless you want to get over the mountain to Charlotte Amalie - then it is a steep climb - but nothing you car can't handle. I visited more than once - in a normal car. No problems.

Yes, what you see is what you get 🙂

I don't know that there are any other villas around - other than Sherri's one other villa, which cannot see you, from what I recall. I visited them both. They are in a residential area....but it is really tropical and reminded me of the South Pacific - really lush and green.

Here's the view - I took this myself (amateur that I am) :

Sherri here! Suppose it isn't appropriate for me to tell anyone how great Rockworks is, huh? 🙂
Terri, you can also do a search on Rockworks, it is mentioned in the forum quite a few times, do the search going back at least a yr.! That should give you some more input!!!! If you have any more questions, I will be happy to answer! As for clean, I dare say that ours is one of the cleanest you will find! Comment from our last guest departing on Jan. 30, 2007 in the questionnaire that McLaughlin asks guests to fill out:
"I'm a "marina maid" and clean houseboats @ our rental business. I checked the corners- CLEAN!!!! Good job, Kiddo"!!! She sure lifted my spirits and I was especially happy to receive her comment as she also rents another villa here in STT and came from that villa to spend another week in ours! Another comment she made was:
"So Clean and perfectly appointed. I felt like I was living in a decorator's magazine! Beautiful!"
Lets just say I am proud of it!
Blu, Thank you for your input and picture, that was very nice!

Sherri, was I right about the hills? I really cannot recall too much about the approaching roads. I recall leaving and going to the right on the road....and needing to make a steep climb...but I think we could have also gone left and picked up another main road without climbing a hill. Do I know the names of these main roads? Of course not!!! 🙂

Blu, you are correct! Take a right out of the driveway going up, the road we are off is Rt. 333 which takes you up to Lionel Pierre Berry Scenic Drive or Rt. 33! OR you can take a left which takes you across to Hull Bay and then turn right onto Hull Bay Rd which is Rt. 37! I like that road as it isn't a steep incline, it is a gentler grade up hill. There are a couple of little jogs to get over to Hull Bay Road tho! I always explain this to our guests and show them on the map when they arrive! 4 wheel Drive is not required to stay here, tho I like 4wd as it doesn't limit the guests to where they can go! One of the assets of RW's and SC is that you park on the level with the villas! Not many villas have that!!!! And you were right in saying that RockWork's is above and to the left of Stone Cottage so privacy is not an issue for either of the houses! Beach wise, we are 1/3 of a mile above Dorothea Beach, but this beach is rocky and only good for a little walk. Hull Bay Beach is less than a mile away and more of a local beach. Homer is there and teaches diving and has a night snorkel tour that he does. Magen's Bay would be next in line! We are also close to Neltjaberg Beach,( may have spelled that wrong), but this beach, tho very nice is VERY secluded and does require 4wd. Blu has mentioned this on an older thread and went into great detail! I am careful about recommending it as one of our guests got stuck down there and had to get a tow truck to get him out! He tried going out onto the beach as I understand!
Blu, no need to know the name of the roads, hardly anyone does! Very few locals know the route numbers here, they came much later on! They jus goin' don da street!!!!! 🙂

Neltjberg Beach.......just amazing.

Here you can see the road down - it is the zig zag line to the right......and yes, 4WD would be needed.

And there's the beach...

Blu,
You don't have to cross private property to get to this beach, do you? I don't want to go to jail!! I remember someone talking about a beach that is difficult to get to that now crosses private property. KK

No, I don't believe you cross any private property. You can barely see the road that connects the Neltjberg access road to the main road. You have to know what landmarks to look for and go slowly, or you'll miss it. Once you turn off onto the beach access road, you start to decend on a road that is only paved in very few places.

gobucs, I have NO idea how you did that after dark!!! Could you see anything down there?

GOBUCS! Long time no hear! Glad to have you ck in on us!!! Lookin' forward to seeing you again!

The main road to Neltjberg Beach does not go on any private property. What KK is referring to is, that you USED TO be able to hike over from Dorothea Beach!!! This no longer can be done as there is a BIG Beautiful house on the point now and the trail is now blocked by that house! (and of course is private property). From Dorothea you have to climb on the rocks on the shore all the way around which I know people do, but doesn't look like fun to me!!!! The Beach is nice and was just there a couple of weeks ago, just wish people would take their garbage with them! I always have the kids pick up some before we leave. 🙂

Neltjberg was featured in a 2 page spread in "Caribbean Travel and Life" magazine about 2 yrs ago. That is how I learned of it. Looked like Eden to me, in the article's photo!!

Too darned near 1/2 day to find it - even being in the truck with a local. It has to be one of the most coveted spots in the Caribbean!

We stayed at rockworks last march. The place was great., We have stayed at a few different villa on st Thomas.
All were very clean.
Rockworks location is really pretty well situated in the middle of the island, so getting from one area to another is not a problem.
The landscaping and grounds are beautiful. We had friends with us so we used both buildings.
We were back on St Thomas the first of February for our 32 nd anniversary. Also have plans for another 10 days the end of march. As you might guess , we really enjoy the islands

We are looking at Rockworks for our vacation in Oct 07 and have read conflicting bed sizes. Are there two Kings or are the beds a different size? Is there a good place for groceries nearby? What kind of small appliances; toaster, blender, crockpot type items? Who/where would one contact to Scuba? What do you recommend for day trips to other islands, going out of Red Hook or is some other method better? We were thinking of taking a flight that gets us from California to St Thomas at approx 7-8pm is Rockworks easy to find at night/in the dark? Appreciate input on these questions. THANKS!

D&D, Sherri is best to respond to most of your questions. As far as finding it, McLaughlin Anderson sends a greeter to the airport to lead you to the villa. I assume you'll be renting a car at the airport (?). You can request that Sherri be the greeter. She adds to the experience by using walkie-talkie system so that she can communicate with you along the way. I think she likes to use it for pointing out the landmarks, grocery store, etc...and for making sure you're ok as you go ride along in your rental and she in her vehicle. I used the system with her one evening when I was following her to the villas to tour them - and it worked out great.

As far as excursions go, people either ferry out of Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie. If you are planning to stay at Rockworks, you can ferry out of either one. STJ is always a nice day excursion and I also enjoy taking the ferry over in the evening for dinner. Visitors also enjoy daytrips to the British Virgin Islands - Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda. Virgin Gorda is especially popular because of "the Baths". Jost is popular because of the draw of White Bay, which is really one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere - and the quintessential beach bars that are on the White Bay beach draw quite an interesting crowd of friendly yachtees. Soggy Dollar Bar (named for the dollars in the pockets of the customers after they swim in from their yachts) is famed as the bar when the drink "Painkiller" was invented - so you'll have to try on there.

Many visitors like to combine a visit to Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke into one daytrip. There are a few tour companies that offer the combo itinerary - with boats that whisk you from island to island.....some with food and drinks (open bar) on the boat, along the way. Other boats might take you to Virgin Gorda's baths and then take you snorkeling at some more famous snorkel spots. You also have the option of taking the public ferry and plotting your own itinerary. The ferry takes longer to get to the destination, so you really can't combine islands in one day's ferry trip - but the adventure/ride might be part of the fun for you.

If you search this forum for past postings on your topics, you'll find more info than you need.

Happy Planning!!

D&D,
You are finding conflicting information on the bed sizes as some of the agents haven't updated their sights to the correct information! Both bedrooms have King size beds! Try: www.mclaughlinanderson.com to get the correct information and to see the virtuals. We have since done some more updating in the villa and will be doing another photo shoot sometime in the future! The villa looks even nicer than what you seeing now, tho the furniture is the same, which is all new! 🙂
Since I manage Rockworks, I do all of our airport escorts!
There is a Grocery Store at the bottom of our hill, tho not my favorite and also 2 little local grocery stores in the neighborhood. They are more expensive of course!
Appliances: Blender, toaster oven, stove/oven, coffee maker, Dishwasher, and fridge/freezer! Mini Fridge and coffee maker in 2nd bedroom!
As Blu said, there are lots of options for day trips, etc. We do have a Scuba guy at Hull Bay close by, his name is Homer, but many more to choose from! Homer offers a night snorkeling tour as well. I always suggest STJ and Virgin Gorda- there is so much to do! 🙂
