Can anyone give us names of some good restaurants in St John, both casual, Sunday brunch, and a bit more up scale, good views etc? Thanks Linda C

You have to try Tage, and if they offer the molten chocolate cake for dessert, make sure you indulge.

Marie,

I just returned from a trip to St John and ate at The Balcony. I had one of the best meals of my vacation. The sea bass was out of this world and my wife's crab cakes were delicious and presented well. We had a server who was fantastic. I can't remember his name but he really knew his wines and was very friendly and attentive. The view overlooking Cruz Bay was incredible and the night time atmosphere is really romantic. I highly recommend it.

Linda, saw your posting and wanted to reply. The Balcony was awesome. The outdoor bar overlooks the bay and the view is wonderful. We had a very romantic dinner there recently, dining on the outdoor patio. The tables overlook all the sailboats in the bay. Request a table by the rail and you will be glad you did. The sunset is great but not very colorful the night we were there - pretty cloudy out that night. The lights of St Thomas when the sun goes down were beautiful though. The food is great and th service was very attentive. Good menu, martini list, wine list, etc. Highly recommend it. We will go back when we return next year. Frank

Drive up to Sunset Ridge Villas. Go to the pool area and you'll have unimpeded views of the sunset.

Let me tell you a wonderful place.

It is on the waterfront across from the National Park Dock near Mongoose Junction called Margarita Phil's.

It is elegant gourmet food with a Tex Mex flavor. he is the most fabulous chef and also Mr. Personality.

The food is beyond questions absolutely wonderful. The drinks (obviously, especially the Margaritas are great. They are all fresh squeezed and made fresh daily) - the food is awesome.

He goes to Mexico on a regular basis and works with the finest chefs there to learn new things. he has the biggest tequila collection in the western hemisphere.

It is just really a really cool place to go.

So somebody weigh in here. I'm getting married on St. John September 1. No reception, just the two of us, so we'd like a really nice, romantic dinner. We'll be in gown and tux. Any great ideas?

Thanks!

CHATEAU BORDEAUX!!!

I was reccommended ZoZo's for my wedding night dinner (just the 2 of us) and it was good - service and food but we ate at Chateau a couple of days after that and wished we could have had our wedding dinner there instead. It is so romantic - the most romantic resturant I have ever been to and the food was to die for!!

Just returned from a glorious week at the Westin. Ate at Stone Terrace (excellent), Morgans Mango (very good), Margarita Phils (good), Tage (my vote for the best restaurant on St John), La Tapa (very good) and ZoZo (also excellent). Please email me with any specific questions.

Its not just that they rely solely on the view & the high traffic location......wharfside leases can be steep even for STJ and the landlord (past & present) make it an even tougher go since they require so much key money just for the "privilge" of renting from them.....for some reasons that seems to attract statesiders with more cash then sense so it becomes a revolving door 🙁 .......sort of the lanlord equivilant of "the Empire"

We are planning a wedding next July in St. John. We would love to have our reception on the waterfront....possibly at a "fun restaurant". We have about 50 guests coming and wanted a place laid back with a beautiful view. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!!!

Joy, it sounds like a Banana Deck type of place. The view isnt the "best" but it is casual, they can accomodate you, and they are a very fun place. They have live music some nights and it has a real island feel.

We just returned from a glorious 8-day stay in a villa on St. John. As serious Foodies, we tried many of the restaurants for both lunch and dinners....For lunch: Panini Beach (good, interesting sandwiches, nice view), the Balcony (okay, reasonably standard menu, but slooooow). For dinner: TEN TABLES (our vote for the best on St. John, we ate there twice including the all-important "last dinner of vacation". Everything we had was amazing and we managed to sample quite a few menu items! The chocolate chip bread pudding with caramel-blueberry sauce is literally to-die-for. A Must Do.); Tage (very good, interesting menu, well-executed), Morgan's Mango (okay, they know how to cook fish properly but the side dishes bombed), The Balcony (pretty good, and the view is pretty), Paradiso (shockingly expensive even by St John standards, impressive menu with unfortunately mediocre execution). Universally, servers were warm, welcoming, and proficient. We did make reservations at a couple of places, but they weren't really necessary. We were also pleased that dressing up was not required anywhere we went, we both wore tailored shorts, nice tops, and sandals everywhere. During a day trip to St. Thomas we lunched at the Tavern on the Waterfront, right smack in the middle of the action on the main drag in Charlotte Amalie...we were a little nervous because there was a guy outside trying to lure in customers, and also we've found that places with views generally have lousy food, but this place was super. The blackened grouper sandwich was excellent.
We had the villa provisioned by Katilady Catering, so when we arrived there were basic breakfast and lunch things, no need to run right out and find a grocery store. And on the nights we chose to cook in, Simple Feast gourmet market was excellent, with beautiful seafood and innovative, tasty side dishes. A real find.
Overall we had a wonderful, relaxing vacation (with only a few minor scares while driving....eeek :-)). We will certainly be back!
