Can anyone give us names of some good restaurants in St John, both casual, Sunday brunch, and a bit more up scale, good views etc? Thanks Linda C

Try this for starters
http://www.usvi.net/rest/st._john.html
http://www.viaccess.net/~winben/index.html
http://www.thefishtrap.com/
http://digitaldudes.com/navigmorgans.htm
Asolare (view). Chateau Bordeaux (view) & Stone Terrace are upscale
Morgans Mango, Fish Trap and and Panini are mid range.
Chilly Billy and JJ's are good value.

More are available.
I do not believe Sunday Brunch is available on STJ.

I just returned from staying in St John in May at Caneel Bay. Caneel has a lovely breakfast/brunch everyday. It is well worth the money! $25pp. There are tons of fresh fruits, omelettes made to order, scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, hash browns, sausage, quiche, cereals, doughnuts, breads, etc. We made sure to eat breakfast/brunch there every day. I think they stop serving around 10 a.m. though, might be later on Sundays though. Very good!!!

Other restaurants I liked was the Fish Trap.. Other than that I didn't care for anything in St John in the town because we found the service so poor that it detracted from the food and overall experience.

Hope this helps.

Ann

We had a good meal at the Mongoose restaurant. That's not the correct name, but close enough. Plenty of atmosphere, and good frozen concoctions!

I ate breakfast/brunch at Caneel everyday. It may not be called brunch and called breakfast, but it is still there. It is at the Caneel Beach Terrace. Serves from 7am - 10 am

hey
I am at the turtle bay estate house at caneel bay. I also have Tuesday night at the Tamrind Court. I am no longer with the company associated with Chloe and Bernards at the Westin(asolare, paradiso, chateau bordeaux). They treated me shamlessly with my family matter, no card or flowers and acted surprised when I came back to the island. That company has a long history of mistreatment to employees and I will no longer support them in any matter. They have had 20 different executive chefs for their 4 restaurants in LESS than two years. They don't care about you as a person. I wasted two years of my life with them and they act like the did me a FAVOR by allowing me to work months without a day off and little compensation. Yeah, I am a little disgruntled, as well as quite a few other locals. I am not an exception, I am the rule. They use St. John as a lure to get hardworking chefs here and then treat them as disposable toilet paper. They had no purpose for what they did to me, my food is top notch, the numbers were better than ever before, and everyone respected me. They fired my replacement one and a half months after me. I really respect Ted Robinson at TAGE for leaving the company and kicking their @$$(financially and food wise). I just wish I had the financial backing to do the EXACT same thing.

I do appreciate your kind words and thoughts. My family is struggling to deal with our tragedy everyday. All we can do is breath deep and handle each day as it comes. I miss my little brother more than any words or tears can show. Everytime I experience anything special or enjoyable, I think about how hes missing out. Then I think that he IS with me and then I think about how it is ME who is missing out on HIM. I am living in one of the most beautiful and amazing places in the world and it is a struggle to even want to leave my house. Can I say anything more?

Ann thanks for the information, I am sorry to hear the service was poor, I wonder if it was the time of year or if that is common in St John. Linda

Chris
I get from the emails that you lost your brother recently, I am very sorry to hear this. I also lost my brother and father this past year and no matter how prepared we think we might be to lose a loved one, we can never be. Your right to take it a day at a time and remember the great times you shared with each other. Keep the chin up and enjoy each beautiful day God gives you.
I also gather that you are a chef. We will be on the island arriving Friday night July 2 and staying until July 6th. This being Carnival where should we grab a quick bite Friday night when we arrive (tired:). Also are you working somewhere that weekend? Linda

Where is the Balcony? Every time I go to STJ there seems to be a new restaurant.

Hey Linda,
I work at the Turtle Bay Estate house in Caneel Bay usually Wednesday through Sunday. On Tuesdays, I have a night as guest chef at the Tamrind Court with my friend and chef, Red. I usually work weekends starting at 130pm until 930pm or so. It depends on when you arrive for a quick bite. If it is later than 9pm, your best hope is to grab a couple of quick burgers or chicken strips from woodys. Theyre the only late night place to go and they are usually quick. The food isnt anything to write home about but the burgers are some of the islands better. I like their wings, too. Otherwise, if you get here early enough, just ditch your luggage at your place and go to the bar at Roma for a pizza to take back to your place for a laid back snack. Their pizza is best on island. Or another option would be to go to the grocery store in red hook, Marina Market, and grab something there. Or yet another would be to go to Starfish and a floor above it is some good Take out. Depending on where you stay and how late it is, they do delivery. Hope that helps. Thank you for the kind words. 😉

Marie,
The Balcony has changed names twice this year. It was Wahoo cafe. I didnt like that.
It was Knotheads. It was mediocre. Finally, it has been the Balcony for three weeks. They seem to have a knack for being understaffed and love to overcook things. If you are lucky enough to be seated next to the managers office window, you might be lucky enough to be peered at by him. I am an admitted foodie. I adore restaurants that focus on quality food. I cannot endorse places that pose as a fine dinning places but lack in service and food quality. It is a turn key operation and I doubt they will be there in two years unless they change their MO. The view is ok as long as you arent hungry.

Thanks, Chris
I never liked Wahoo. Don't understand why someone can't make a go of such a great spot. Will you be at Tamarind every Tuesday? Will be down on the 14th of July to sail for a couple of weeks and then will be staying in Cruz Bay for two weeks after that. I often go to Tamarind when they have events. Will come on a Tuesday if you are going to be there. Looked for you before when I went to the Westin for lunch one day but to no avail.
Hope to see you in STJ.

Marie,
I know why they havent been able to make a go of it. Same reason that Rumbalaya doesnt make it with locals. They base all thier success on the view. The top restaurants on STJ as well as anywhere are based on the chef. Thats why the good chefs are so in demand. Places try to cheap out on the chefs and then they have nothing to build on. Tage and Ten Tables dont have the best kitchens or facilities on the island but they have passionate and dedicated chefs who love food. Once that is established, the chef wont allow a server mess up the dinning experience of his food by a careless server. And if the food is wonderful, the best servers are lining up to work there because they know if they do their part, they will make great money.
I am the guest chef every Tuesday at the Tamarind Inn, so yeah, I will be there with my friend Red. We hope you come to visit. We love to do something special for people who make an effort to visit. It is vegetarian night but we do have "meat" options, also.

Linda,
If you do visit, I am working at the turtle bay estate house at caneel. They normally dont allow people unless they are guests of caneel. You can call and see since it isnt season, they might make exceptions. If you do, try to get your server to let me know which table it is so I might be able to send you out something fun. 😉
