Islander, this question is more for you......
Are there any new restaurants on the island that I should know about? I get to St. Thomas every February with a travel-group and am always looking for what's new and good to recommend to my clients. Last year Chickies Place and Marisol were recommended, and while I found Chickies Place a little pricey for what they presented, I found Marisol's to be the perfect choice and heard the same from my clients afterwards! Also, for some of the restaurants that have been around for awhile, such as Victor's New Hideout and Craig & Sallys....are they still going good?
What do You recommend?

Thanks!
Kim

Kim: Well, I'll step up to the plate...First of all, Chickie's is no longer...Marisol is still great, as is Craig and Sally's. New restaurants include The Seafood Jungle on the East End...Azure at Sapphire condos (where the Oasis used to be)...Off the Hook (former Wahoo) in Red Hook... Raffles at Compass Point has a new owner... the old Puzzles riverboat in Saga Haven now has brick oven pizza...I am sure I left some of the new ones off, but maybe someone will help me...

Candace wow you did a great job summarizing the new dining locations!! Not sure what else to add. I have to agree Marisol is still great. Craig and Sallys wonderful dining there. Agave Terrace, Herve's, Room with a View, Banana Tree Grill,... so many great restaurants here. Cuzzins if you want local food. There are several good burger/bar restaurants in Havensight if you want that type of atmosphere. Red Hook has several good ones right on the marina as well.

Enjoy your trip - and I know you will find many great restaurants both ones that have been around and still are great and some of the news ones Candace mentioned!

Hello Faustina,

You can order cookbooks from
http://www.vitraders.com

USVI food is often Caribbean food, as the USVI is made up of so many people from the other Caribbean islands. SOme of the cookbooks at this site, have deserts and drinks as well.

And another erstwhile restaurant is Caesar's at Marriott Morning Star- it has been turned into a beach bar called Coco Joe's.

Candace, I was just there last week, the restaurant was alrady closed so I did not notice the signage - did the restaurant downstairs become the beach bar - I thought the beach bar was just the upstairs part????? I never went early when it would still be diner time so I don't know??? So Coco Joe's has two parts, the restaurant where Caesar's was and then the upstairs where the bar, dancing and pool tables are? Thanks!!

Islander: I did not go upstairs, so I am assuming that the pool tables are still up there. They just made the Caesar's space into a beach bar. The thing that clued me was that the "Roman" sculptures have all been painted garish colors and that there is fishnet strewn across the restaurant. The menu is "bar food"- no more lovely pizza. They had live music on Friday afternoon in the area closest to the pool, so they may have moved the dancing downstairs, too.

Islander...
Do I need reservations for restaurants such as Marisol's, Craig & Sally's and Herve's? We are traveling in a large group and it would be great to have reservations for the restaurants if they take them. How about Room With a View and Banana Tree Grill? Also, do most of these restaurants have phone numbers listed somewhere or websites on the net?
We will be celebrating a 50th birthday and a 20th wedding anniversary while we are there in February and need two really great places to celebrate...What do you suggest? If I can I would like to call ahead for seating. Thanks.

Dear Sandy: If you have a large group, you definitely need reservations. Some places may be able to give you a private room, or at least a more private corner! Yes, phone numbers are available- on onepaper.com. If you narrow it down, someone will help you on this board, I'm sure. All of the places you have listed have a great following. What sort of food and ambiance were you looking for? Some are view-oriented (like Banana Tree) while others are indoors- oriented (?) like Craig and Sally's. There are some other restaurants which are outside/on the water like Blue Moon, Mim's and Off the Hook. Enjoy your celebration!

When you arrive look for the Restaurant Guide available in the airport. It's got small maps to each of the restaurants in it. Most are listed in the phone book or the Yellow Book which you also pick up in the airport. Reservations are appreciated especially for larger parties.
