My husband and I are looking forward to our first trip to St. John at the beginning of July. We would like to try some of the fine dining restaurants mentioned on this site. Is it important to make reservations well in advance (i.e. before we leave home)? Or should we be able to get in if we call once we arrive? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
I suggest you start the island lifestyle early...slow down. Nothing is that planned.
Seriously, most places don't need reservations unless the party is 6+ and during the off season they are very accommodating. When you get there, call if you want but in most cases you will find it not necessary.
Hello,
I would suggest calling the day before or the same day you want the reservation just to make sure they are open or aren't having a private function ect.... not necessary to do it before you get to St. John.

Thanks for your replies! Guess that's the whole point of this vacation after all--taking time to just relax, enjoy it, and see what happens...I needed the reminder 🙂 -Lori
I put my watch in my pocket on the ride to Red Hook. I like knowing that there's nowhere I have to be by any particular time for a week or more. I wouldn't want to be having a splendid day in the water and having my dinner reservation that night in the back of my mind. We go somewhere for dinner whenever we get around to it and if it's too long a wait, we go somewhere else. So many good places. It's all good.
The most disappointing meal we had on St. John was at one of the "fine" dining restaurants. Don't waste your money. Best meal was at The Lime Inn and a close second was Shipwreck Landing. You do not need reservations for either, in fact, The Lime Inn does not take reservations (at least not on Shrimp night.) We also had good meals at the Fishtrap and Rhumbline.
