Hi,
My wife and I will be spending a week in St Thomas in August. Does anyone have recommendations for restaurants in St Thomas and St John (Cruz Bay)? We were last in the USVI in 2005, and went to Herve (fabulous!), Paradise Point (gorgeous sunset, okay food), Cuzzins (for lunch), Frigate East, High Tide (I think this was the one by the ferry boat dock in Cruz Bay and Fish Trap in St Johns.

Any other good choices you recommend we try this time?

Joe

Had one of the best meals of my life at Tony Romano's last week. Excellent, educated waitstaff. Award winning wine list. The food was amazing, chef Tony creates his own signiture dishes that are to die for.

haha - no worries EE.

After reading your list, and having tried them, with the exception of Lotus, I am now feeling that the east end is sorrowfully lacking in great dining options with memorable atmosphere. Why aren't there more al fresco options with creative menus? I'd love to open something special and sophisticated - high up on the hill above Red Hook, with a wide stone dining terrace and a menu inspired by travels to Thailand, Caribbean, France, Africa and Italy. I'm imagining space for an herb garden - everything so fresh. If anyone wants to back me, let's talk!

As for the longing for restaurants of days gone by, I fondly remember Pappagallo.

B;u: Are you talking about Papagayo's, the Mexican restaurant which used to be in Tillett Gardens? Thanks for the memories - they had THE BEST chimichangas. I'm not generally a big fan of Mexican food as most of the commercial places tend to serve very watered down versions of true classics, but that was a romping place with great grub!

Room With a View at Bluebeard's Castle is MUCH better and not quite as expensive. I was there just last week and the food is out of this world. Was at Duffy's Love Shack Wednesday. The atmosphere is fun but the food was really overpriced and not good at all. The Pu Pu platter we ordered consisted of some chicken skewers, a few small shrimp, 4 thin slices of grilled pineapple, a plantain cut into quarters and some kind of pineapple/tomato relish. Not sure how the relish fit in but I think they needed to fill in the indention on the serving platter and this was certainly a cheap way to do it. The sandwiches we ordered were pretty unremarkable and run $8 -$16. If you're out toward the Sapphire beach resort just past Red Hook the Sea Grape Grill is a good casual place to eat as well. Two guys from MA are running it and they made us feel like family. Great drinks too! Have fun.

Just to clarify, the restaurant at Sapphire Village is the Grapevine Grill. The Sea Grape is a spa at the Elysian, which is also very nice, but kinda short on food! 😉
