Hi,
My wife and I will be spending a week in St Thomas in August. Does anyone have recommendations for restaurants in St Thomas and St John (Cruz Bay)? We were last in the USVI in 2005, and went to Herve (fabulous!), Paradise Point (gorgeous sunset, okay food), Cuzzins (for lunch), Frigate East, High Tide (I think this was the one by the ferry boat dock in Cruz Bay and Fish Trap in St Johns.

Any other good choices you recommend we try this time?

Joe

Zozo's at Gallows Point in Cruz Bay. Try the calimari with pesto sauce. Entre osso bucco and you'll have one of the best meals on your vacation. Make a reservation when you get there, even a day ahead is okay.

If you are there over on a Wednesday evening try the all you can eat shrimp, just nice and spicy at the Lime Inn. No reservations taken. You will be thirsty afterwards and your palate will demand a few beers before heading back on the ferry.

Now all that being said, you might want to check if they are open in August.

We enjoyed both Craig & Sally's and Banana Tree Grille in St. Thomas.

I second the Zozo's recommendation on St. John.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

Havana Blue on STT. It is in the Marriott Morningstar, but is independently owned. Food is Latin / Pac-Rim inspired. Style is upscale and tropically chic. It is expensive - but what isn't there?

DELICIOUS!!! Go at sunet and get a spot at the rail - make a reservation. Miso Sea Bass is the signature dish. Mojitos are the signature drink (and their mango mojitos are to die for).

St John: For upscale, Paradiso is excellent. For more casual, we really like Margarita Phils, for ultra-casual, you can't beat Uncle Joe's BBQ

St. Thomas: Not as familiar, but Bella Blue is very good.

Joe,

You don't specify what kind of restaurant you're looking for, whether high end or casual. You've got a nice variety of restaurants on your list from your last visit.

Frigate East is no longer. It's been closed for a couple of years.

Here's a list of restaurants I've enjoyed over the past several years.:

High end:
Banana Tree Grill (Bluebeard's Castle)
Room with a View (Bluebeard's Castle)
Mafolie (above Charlotte Amalie, amazing views)
Blue Moon Cafe (Secret Harbour Resort)

Moderate:
Alexander's Bela Blu (Frenchtown)
Mim's Seaside Bistro (Watergate Condos near Bolongo Beach Resort)
Limetree Beach Bistro (Bluebeard's Beach Club)
Tavern on the Waterfront (downtown)
Caribbean Saloon and Steakhouse (Red Hook)
Indigo (Magen's Resort)

Casual:
Greenhouse (downtown)
Molly Malone's (Red Hook)
Duffy's Love Shack (Red Hook)
Hook Line and Sinker (Frenchtown)
Iggie's (Bolongo Beach Resort)

If I haven't mentioned any restaurants it's because I haven't tried them (or I've forgotten them over the years). There's still a long list of places I'd like to try. So many great restaurants on St. Thomas. I have a couple of others that are good lunch destinations and my favorite for breakfast is Delly Deck in Havensight mall.

The only place that sticks out to which I intentionally didn't return after a couple of tries is Off the Hook in Red Hook. Arrogant staff, slow service, high prices, something "wrong" with meals both times. If someone can convince me it's changed I'd give it another go.

Gerie

great list. thank you!
I'm excited about Havana Blue because we're staying at the Marriot in Sept and at its nice to know there is something exciting on the property! The Havana Blue website makes it seem ultra glam!

Has anyone been to Herve recently? is it still good?

Blu, I know you've been to Indigo and love it...can you describe it a bit more for me...would you say its a good place for a nice special occassion dinner? compared to places like Agave and Herve with the views..?
thanks so much!

My vote is for Indigo. Friday night Caribbean lobster special. Yum. Indigo is casual.
We went to Blue Moon. It was nice and more pricey than Indigo. In my opinion the food at Indigo was far better. I guess you pay for the atmosphere at Blue Moon. It is a great setting right on the water.
Let us know where you end up going and what you liked.

Bananna Tree @ Blue Beard's Castle - fabulous view, great food and very good service. Cannot go wrong. Have you been to Duffy's Love Shack?

nams,

Havana Blue is really glam, yes. It is open-air, but really upscale and looks just like the photos. IMO, those photos are too dark on the website...but the place is really like that at night....glowing in candles and with white curtains billowing in from the edges - latin inspired fusion music playing. People come a little more dressed than you'll find at most other places. A nice sun-dress would be fine. I saw people coming in gowns, but i think they might have been at a wedding. The food is awesome and very creative. The place is very romantic. The service is kind of stuffy, but just ignore that. When I encounter a stuffy wait person, i just remind myself that they're WORKING and I'm on vacation - enough said. I had some kind of mango spring rolls for dessert and I wanted to have them every day or the rest of my life!! It is worth being excited about.

Indigo has really good food and the physical space is tropical and very pleasant. There is no view because, though it is outdoors, it faces a mountain. You many be able to see the water off in the distance - and you are really close to Magens bay, but Indigo sits kind of low, so you cannot see the beach from it. Your view is of a mountain with houses on it - nice houses - but houses, nonetheless. Tables surround a pool and there's a small waterfall at one end of the pool, which makes that nice waterfall sound. The water comes down some rocks and tropical landscaping, and it is lit with some colorful lights, which add to the atmosphere at night. The pool is not really lit up - just enough light to see - not bright blue pool lighting. There are tiki torches all around - and many of the tables have handsome, heavy, canvas umbrellas over them --- but upscale, indigo colored umbrellas - not tacky, beachy looking umbrellas. There are large tropical potted plants and palms all around. Tables and chairs are a heavy, rich looking iron - and i recall the metalwork being punctuated with some kind of fish motif- very nice. When i was there easier this month, they were planning for the grand opening of their new sushi lounge. I would go there for a special occasion, but be sure to have a reservation. There is one row of tables that is right at the pool's edge and another row of tables that is one aisle over. If you want to be right by the pool's edge, make sure you tell them that. If there are kids there, and they're jumping into the pool, you might get a little splash now and then (we had to tell our kids not to jump in and splash people who were dining near the deep end- but other parents may not be conscious). I like to dine al fresco when I'm in the VI, so I cannot comment on places that are indoors since I haven't been to them to compare them to Indigo. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about both Herve and Room with a View. Indigo has a rather limited menu, so it might be worth looking to see if your group might enjoy something on it. Everything is very good - but there isn't a ton to choose from. What they do, they do very well.

hummm ... no one mentions Robert's at the Elysian and it gets very good "reviews" (have eaten there only once when he first opened) and Gerie forgot to mention "Easter dinner" at the Toad and Tart - an English-style "pub" with some well-priced specials on weekends. Might want to head to Cuzzin's on Back Street for some local grub and I used to like the roti's from - think the name was Carol's or some feminine name - in Smith Bay but haven't checked on my last two visits to see if she is still there. Also for wienerschnitzel and other German treats, check out Haufbrau Haus or for high-end Italian, Tony Romano's.
And if you happen to be out and about on St. John, might want to stop by and see if Ms. Vie is open for lunch. Galic chicken and other homemade treats (like the tarts) are wonderful! She is not open everyday so it can be hit or miss if you don't call first.

Thank you soooo much! You are so wonderfully kind to take the time to reply to my question in such precise detail! I love it! This will certainly help make my decision. Cant wait to be at Havana Blue right about now!

CShell - Carol's Roti closed down about a year ago, When you said "Haufbrau Haus" did you mean Schnitzel Haus?" Petra is still there but she does close down for a couple of months in the summer, so best to check. Cheers!

ZoZo's!!! Ask to sit at the bar upstairs (you might want to make a reservation). Awesome food and sunsets! Also enjoyed The Balcony in Cruz Bay as well.

STT Resident,
Yup ... don't know why Haufbrau Haus came off the fingertips - you, of course, are correct. Know that I got a funny look when I inquired at Secret Harbour if Petra was still open. And where is PatLeCorte (of Fiddleleaf, etc fame) now? Also wondered what is happening, if anything, with BlackBeard's? Used to be one of my favorite dining spots and no one speaks of it at all anymore. The main topic of conversation with the "old guard" (lovingly referred to as the "Talking Heads" as the most you saw was from the neck up since the rest was in the water) on Cowpet Beach was always the latest and greatest restaurants and I sure miss that!

CShell: Pat LaCorte has been at Oceana (the old Chart House) for a few years now. Blackbeard's has something there but nothing much is spoken about it for whatever reason. Vernon Ball has the restaurant but I can't figure out why he closed down 1829 to reinvent the wheel at Blackbeard's as the latter was so wonderfully elegant for a special treat and visitors with fond memories of it still ask about it. Cheers!

We highly recommend Robert's, get there early for happy hour, get one of Page's famous frozen drinks.
Schnitzel Haus has become one of our "must do's" every year.
Let's not forget Latitude 18.

And The Toad and Tart is on our radar screen this year, we've always said we need to have dinner there but just keep running out of time, maybe we need to extend out visit to 3 weeks 🙂

Blackbeard's Restaurant is closed. The property is being used for historical tours.

My east end recommendations: Robert's, East End Cafe, Molly Molone's (sorry, Blu!), Lotus. Also if the new Bottom's Up is open, it will be worth a try as Randy and his crew is running it.
