Is it necessary to have an advance reservation for renting a car or getting on a snorkeling tour? We are planning our first trip to St Thomas/St John and since we are not sure what we want to do, we thought we'd just wait till we got there. We were thinking of just taking one day at a time instead of planning our week in advance. Is a bad idea? On the other hand we don't want to be completely out of luck. Any advice?

depending on were you are staying I would recommend renting a car for the week. taxi rates will eat you up if taking several people.

toms: Unless you are here for Carnival Week, Christmas/New Year's or some other really big holiday, you should be able to pick your tour dates once you get here. You'll probably want to call a few days in advance, or call and ask them when an open day is. I'd get the car reservation ahead of time. I think the one day at a time idea is perfect! Have fun.
