I will be going to St. John for a week with 2 children ages 2-1/2 and 4-1/2. We will be renting a car and need infant/child seats for the children. One rental car company quoted me $5 a day for these seats which seems excessive.

Any suggestions?

Hi Don.

When are you traveling? Courtesy Car Rental has a September/October special that includes one free car seat. Otherwise, five dollars a day is the going rate but you might try calling around to see if someone will negotiate two seats for the price of one. In high season there is more demand than supply so few firms will negotiate their rates. Many parents bring car seats from home. You can use a car seat on the plane or check it at the gate or at the counter.

Another option is to bring your own. You can check one or both, or use one or both on the plane (especially good for the 2 1/2 year old). I have two children spaced 19 month apart. We typically check the older child's seat and carry the seat for the youngest. To make seat lugging easier, I purchased a rolling luggage cart - the type you can strap a suitcase to - it works perfectly for the carseat. I purchased mine at target for $19.00.
