Hello:
We are coming down in two weeks!! Can't wait. I was wondering whether or not it would be necessary to rent a car or just take cabs as we are only staying 4 nights. We want to shop in Charlotte Amalie one day, the guys are going to golf one day, we will lay out on the beach one day. Any opinions? I'd rather just take a cab and not have to worry about getting lost if they are readily available.

Also, we were thinking of visiting Bologna? (sp) Beach on Sunday. The guys wanted to watch football att Iggys and we girls could be on the beach? Can you spend the day on that beach even if you are not staying at that hotel?

Thanks,

Theresa S.

We rent a car every time we go to the islands and wouldn't have it any other way. If you want a suggestion as to who to rent from just write back. I don't like sounding like a commercial for the company all the time. If you are into swimming and snorkeling than don't spend the day at Bolongo Beach, leave the guys there and head to one of the many beautiful beaches that St. Thomas has to offer or get brave and take the car ferry to St. John and really enjoy the beaches.

Rick:
Thanks for answering my post. Yes, I would be interested in the car rental company that you like. Would you mind telling me why you prefer it over taking cabs? Also, why would you not recommend Bolongo Beach? We are staying at Saphire Beach. Is that one better?
Thank you,
Theresa S.

Theresa: The deal with renting a car vs. taxi- Each time you go somewhere in a taxi, you will be charged a per person rate. So, for example, from Sapphire to town for shopping- 4 people will be charged $8 each, one way. That one round trip will cost you $64, if my math and taxi rate sheet are correct! If you are going to travel around, a car is useful and cheaper. You might rent one for part of the time and hang out at Sapphire, the rest.

Everyone has favorite beaches, "better" is in the mind of the beholder. A good idea is to take your rental car and a map (you won't get lost, it's an island!) and check out several. Iggie's is a fun beach bar and Bolongo is great for sunning. There are lots of other places like that too! Sapphire is great for sunning. Sample around a bit! At Sapphire, be sure to stop at Restaurant Azure by the pool at Sapphire Village- it is much better than the beach resort's restaurants...And Sapphire is close to Red Hook for plenty of other dining choices. Hey, have fun!

Theresa,

I say rent a car also for economic reasons as East Ender mentioned and for the flexiability of going and coming when you like, where you like, pack a cooler with drinks and food in the truck and go to the beach, pick up and go somewhere else - sooo much easier particularly for a group.

I think the explanation about Bolongo was stated by Rick: he said if you want to swim or snorkel don't go there... I will elaborate. The beach is pretty and nice for reading, sitting, sunning, walking, having drinks... overall enjoying the beach itself. The water is not as good as other neigboring beaches... rocky on one end, often a bit rough, not very clear... I think this is what Rick meant. But it is fine if you girls want to talk, have a drink, sit in chairs and sun... while the guys watch sports and sit at the bar.

Have a great time. And be sure to stop back after the trip and tell us what you did and enjoyed!! Trip stories are great!!

Like Theresa and Roberta, I will be there in the next few weeks and would like to know the name of the rental company referred to in earlier messages. Also, what about places with great "spa" services. Any thoughts?

I have read Rick's post, I believe the rental car agency he uses is Dependable Car Rental.

Hello Jaxs,

On St. Thomas try the Wyhdham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa. I believe the Ritz Resort also has Spa facilities.
