We are stopping in St. Thomas next week on a cruise but I would like to visit St. John instead. We have heard nothing but fantastic things and would like the opportunity to check out the island. Just being there a day - I would like to see many sights and don't really want the hassle of driving myself. Can you recommend to me where to get a taxi to take me around for the day - about 4 hours? I would like to find someone knowledgeable about the island, the history and the sights. Do you by any chance know the going rate ?
I highly recommend Wheatley Taxi Service, 340-473-8900. I am in the villa rental business and they are our preferred providers. Quite knowledgeable, reliable and prompt service. I kid you not. http://wheatleytaxiservice.com/default.aspx
I believe Whealey is on STT.
On STJ it will be possible to hire a taxi for any length of time you would like but if it is just for 2 it will be expensive. The taxi's here hold 16-20 people and they charge per person - so if it is just the 2 of you he will have to cover loss of business. The best thing to do is to take an island tour (they will fill a taxi before leaving) and they will take you all over the North Shore and stop at all the overlooks - they do not go to Coral Bay however and the cost is in the $25.00 pp range (I think) . You can join a tour right as you get off the ferry all the taxi's will be waiting.

I have done business with a lovely gentleman named Lionel in the past but don't know if he is around anymore or if he still does this business but he was excellent! Maybe one if the regulars on this board know him and can help you. Otherwise try this board, the posters here are mostly from St. John.
