Hi, I am new to this board. I rented a car for Feb from Dependable and I was just told by someone not affiliated with this company that if something happens on St. John, they will not come to fix it/help me - it will all be at my expense. I was also told that Amalie would come over. Is anyone aware of whether this is true?
Thanks,
Michelle
This is true. Most rental agencies will not cover a problem if it occurs on St. John. So you are own your own if a problem happens.
I'm not sure that there is any coverage you can get to cover St. John unless you rent the car over there. By the way the car will cost you another 10-20% on St. John! So that is where they get you.

Michelle - give Dependable and Amalie Car Rental a call and see what their policies are for road side assistance if you need it while over on St. John. Post what you find out (tu).

I would have to agree with Islander call Dependable and ask them. From everything I have seen posted about them they go out of there way to help customers. Also since you are renting on St Thomas and going to St John make sure you make some to to grocery shop on St Thomas it will save you a substantial amount of money, which in turn you can use to eat out on St John 🙂

Please make sure you ask specifically if you are ALLOWED to take the car from STT to STJ, as most do not even allow it. I rented from Discount just outside the airport last year and the car broke down in STJ. I spent the entire day dealing with unhelpful people at Discount. The bottom line was that I paid to have it towed to the ferry in STJ back on the ferry to STT and lost a whole day of vacation. They refused to reimburse any of my expenses or lost time and had no explanation as to why their brand new car didn't work. We rented from Budget this year (just back this week) at t he airport. Had a reservation and waited 2.5 hours for our car! Other than that, it was fine, but be prepared for things to be extra slow on the islands....
I'm sorry, but there's no excuse at all to wait for a rental car for 2 1/2 hours. Yes, everything slows down on the islands, but that's just rediculous.
Contact Budget corporate and let them know what happened.
Speaking of Budget, someone recently stated on another forum that there is a Budget office on STJ. True or False?? If true, would they honor rentals from Budget on STT. Thanks
Hertz is the only company on St John hence Hertz is the only company that does not allow their cars to be taken to St John. it is a small chance you are taking and you need to compare the savings to the hassle if something happens. The odds are slim.
