Hi, We're coming to St, John for our honeymoon in July. First time to visit. What's the preferred vehicle for renting to get around the island? My preference is a Jeep Wrangler, but I would appreciate feedback from the board. Thanks.
You'll see tons of messages about this all over this message board. The roads are narrow and windy and slippery when wet. we always have rented little Suzukis which work well for up to 4 of us. See what other people think about 4WD but for the most part you won't be driving on the beaches, thank god, and I don't remember any difficulties with the Suzukis for getting up and down the hills. Again, scan and you'll see tons of messages about this.
4 wheel drive is really not needed but recommended. If you rent in St. John, they mainly have 4WD vehicles. Some of the hills are steep and tricky and you may need at least 4 high if it gets slippery after a rain! There are lots of regular cars there that routinely traverse the roads.
