We are headed to St Thomas for our wedding in May and I am trying to give my guests an idea of rental cars. Is it usually cheaper to book ahead of time at the airport or can you just take a taxi to your hotel upon arrival and grab a rental car as you need it throughout the week? Obviously some of my guests will be more "adventurous" and want a car for the week, but others may be content at the hotel beach most days and may not need one for the week.
I just wanted to get an idea if a spur of the moment rental was easy to do and reasonable in cost or if booking ahead for the week was a better deal.

Yes its possiable for your guests that decide once on island that they want to rent a car for a day or a couple days to find an agency with available cars. It is typically cheaper to book in advance for a week... rather then doing a day to day rental.
If you want to give your guests some price ideas, go to a couple of the agency web sites (click on St. Thomas at the top of this page, from the drop down select Car Rental) and put in your dates for reservations and see what type of rates you get or give them a call.
