First time to St Thomas, staying at Marriott Fisherman's. There are 3 of us (2 adults + 7 yr old) and seeing the taxi rates per person x 3 look like the $ can rack up quickly. I am thinking about getting a rental car. No issues with left side driving done that in other country's. Are they any other issues with rental vs taxi? Based on what I heard about food cost at the hotel and getting out to taste other restaurants and see other sites is seems the payback would be quick. Any thought on this and tips on advantages with a rental. Also, any experience with taking the car to St John's to explore?

Absolutely rent a car! Your options for getting out and about from Frenchman's Reef to anywhere from there will be taxis, taxis, taxis and the cost will be huge. A compact car should run you about $250/week and the rental car companies will allow you to take the car over on the car barge to St. John EXCEPT for Hertz. The majority will NOT come over to STJ if you have a mechanical problem but this is a very rare occurrence. Hope this helps. Cheers!

STT Resident is right on!

We stayed at the Marriott our first time on the island (used Marriott points for free room). Taxis are awesome because you just tell them where to take you and don't worry. They are, as you say, very costly. I'm glad we did it the first time there since we had not driven "left", not ever really explored the island. We've been back 5 times since and rent from Budget each time.

Do rent the car - it not only saves you money, but more importantly gives you freedome to enjoy the entire island on your own schedule.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

Thanks. Any tips on the Marriott? (used points as well) Should we eat there or better off finding a place off property? Also, heard there is a water shuttle to town?

There are so many dining optons on STT and although I know nothing about the food at Frenchman's Reef, hotel food in general is rarely touted as anything exceptional and is usually over priced. The "Reefer" shuttle ferry runs between the hotel and waterfront and I beileve it stops running around 5PM. Cheers!
