We are traveling to St. John in the fall and debating between renting a car at STT and taking the car ferry over or using Hotel transfer and taking taxi into town for dinners. Any opinions on car rental/ferry? Looking at total cost for Hotel transfers to Westin and at least a $40 cab fare to have dinner in Cruz bay ever night.
Why don't you just rent a car in STJ? We always stay at the Westin, use their transfer service (we have a small child and it is tremendously convenient), and then we rent on-site from O'Connor's. This works for us, but maybe not as good an idea if you're on a budget. Besides, you'll want a jeep to explore all the beaches, not just to go into town at night for dinner. Honestly, since we have a villa at the Westin, we tend to only eat in town about 2 nights out of seven.

Som rent on STJ,. some rent on STT and ferry the car over and back.
Hotwire routinely runs excellent deals on STT airport rentals. Everyone I lknow who has done hotwire, including me 3X, has always gotten an AVIS car. Those can go to STJ. Hertz cannot.
If your budget will allow, it might be best to rent on STJ due to ease of repair and some STJ rentl agents offer parking in their lots while you're in Cruz Bay, shopping, dining, etc.
I've always gotten a rate of between $15 - $20/day+ tax, with Hotwire on STT.
