Can I rent a car on St Thomas and bring it over on the ferry for a week at The Westin St. John, or do I have to rent on St. John??? I thought I read somewhere that it was not allowed but I can't find that info any longer. Thanks

Check with the agency by phone before you rent from them, as some allow it and others don't. And ome will allow it, but not have any service if you have a dead battery, breakdown, lock keys inside, etc.

Another advantage to renting on STJ is several of the agencies will allow you to park in their lots when in Cruz Bay. Finding parking can be a pain at times.

And that's a good point, too! I'd recommend a taxi to the waterfront ferry, then it's only $7 to get to Cruz bay (p/p). So,probably $5p/p to get to the ferry and $1 per bag. When you get to Cruz Bay, there are lots of places to rent cars. Who should she use, guys? Sould she reserve one or risk them having availability?

Budget allows it and so does Dependible Car rental. We are going to do that only because we are spending some days on each island and don't want to switch rentals. We also thought that with an extremely tired 5 year old (we will be flying all night) it will be easier to load him and our stuff into the car at the airport. As far as service, they will come over to STJ for anything major but you are on your own for minor stuff such as a dead battery or flat tire. So it depends on your plans if it makes sense to rent in STT.

All of the STJ rentals will be within a few $$ of each other. We used C&C ( http://www.cccarrental.com/) and they let you park in their lot. I would not leave reservations too late, no more than 6 weeks prior to needing one just to make sure you have it.

Thanks everyone for the info. It's funny when I called Budget they said absolutely no vehicles can be taken on ferries, kind of a general statement. But when I called Budget St. Thomas Iwas told I absolutely can take a vehicle on a ferry. In fact, when you make a reservation online, which I did, it states and I quote "CROSS BORDER TRAFFIC: All vehicles may be taken on the ferry to St. John There are four ferry companies available, no appointment is necessary. Ferry fee is apporximately USD $25.00 roundtrip. Ferry arrangements can be made upon arival. No other CBT is allowed."
Course you find this out AFTER you make the reservation 🙂 So a compact car on ST. Thomas runs about $171 with everything and I only seem to be able to find a jeep on St. John for about $400. Are jeeps all they rent on St. John????

Hello Judy,

Yes, on St. John it's almost all jeeps. (a few places have suv's and small vans for larger groups)
