Hi - Were going to stay on St Thomas, then take the car barge to St John twice. Do we need a jeep for this, I hear it is a must? We'd rather just a small aircond. car, but don't want to get stuck in the mud. Thanks so much!!
Danielle,
A jeep type vehicle is certain preferable, not so much because of mud but rather traction on steep pavement and ground clearance over humps and bumps.
That said, till you pay for and wait for the car ferry you might find it easier all the way around to just take the regular ferry to St. John and grab a taxi to wherever you want to go. The drivers will be more than happy to pick you up later, etc.

Hello Danielle,
My opinion... If you are renting a car on St. Thomas and then plan to visit St. John twice and you want a car and most of your time is on St. Thomas then get a car... a jeep on St. John while a good bet is not a requirement. I have taken cars over on the barge and driven on St. John with them without problems.
A side note: If you want to go to places/beaches like Lameshur then a jeep is a better idea... if you are sticking to Trunk, Cinnamon, Maho, Salt Pond, Hawksnest, Caneel... a car is fine.
