Headed to St. Thomas on Saturday for a week, will be staying at Ren. Grand Beach. Does anyone suggest renting a car or should we rely on taxis. Plan to do a day trip to St. John, a day in Charlotte-Amorlie, touring the beaches, etc. What's parking like?

Any comments will be appreciated! Thank you.

We're leaving on the 27th and staying at the R for 10 nights. The R has an Avis rental desk at the hotel. I compared prices and it seemed to be competative. From everything I have read, renting a car seems to be the way to go if you plan on exploring the island.

If you plan on going into town, St. John, beach hopping - you would do best by renting a car. The taxis fees will add up quickly with those trips alone, Not to mention if you wanted to go out to dinner, or out at night, or anywhere else during that week. Renting a car allows you more flexability with your plans, you can hop in your car and just go and leave when you are ready, or go somewhere else if you dont like where you headed the first time - with a taxi you find its more of a hassle. You can take you rental car over to St. John on the car barge - and drive around St. John too.

Have a great trip.

We always rent a car. We don't like being tied down to any one place. We have always used Dependable Car Rental (they have a web site) and they come right to the airport to pick you up. They are a small family business and they have always gone out of their way to help us out even when I've screwed up my reservation.

I highly recommend Dependable Car rental, we used they before we decided to bring a car down here. They can pick you up at airport or will come get you at hotel and take you to their office to do paperwork.

Depending on when your flight arrives you may want to take taxi to hotel and get car the next day. If you are not familar with St. Thomas and driving on the left, learning at night is not recommended. Your hotel is "in the country" and street lighting is minimal and roads are only 1 lane in each direction.

You should enjoy your stay here, it has been beautiful as usual.
