I saw a comment about car rental in another thread, and I did not want to hijack that thread so I am posting new.

Bluwater, you mentioned some great rates from reserving a car through hotwire. I searched and came up with very similar rates to what I have found on other sites. Is there a trick to getting good rental rates through Hotwire?

Thanks, Joe

Joe, I've often found the $15 - $17 rate without any problems. However, in some cases, I've had to play around with the travel dates. Once, I was staying for 2 weeks and had to rent for something like 10 days, return the car, and re-rent it for the other 5 days - just to make the rate work out. Try taking days off of the start or end of your visit. If you can't get to the low rate by doing that, then maybe the rate just isn't good for your visit timing:( Also, I've seen Hotwire rates change day to day on the Hotwire site...so if you don't see it one day, keep checking their site each day to see if the rate changes.

Blu -
Have you always been given a rental through one of the companies that will let their cars go over to STJ? I tried playing around Hotwire for a car for the Diva trip in May but stopped when it didn't look like I could pick the car rental company - maybe I didn't;t go far enough in the process. We are up to 5 women now (with all of our crapola) so it's either going to have to be a mini van, a large SUV or 2 small cars. Thanks!!

MargyZ, I have always gotten AVIS - so has everyone I've checked with and/or referred.

I am not making any guarantees...but I am talking about a lot of rentals. I also buy the Hotwire trip cancellation insurance, since the deal is not refundable. The ins is really cheap. I think I paid $15 total for the trip cancellation ins last month.

Avis cars can go to STJ.

I was quoted $16 per day through Hotwire after reading about it on this board. Shopped it around for about 10 minutes. When I went back to reserve, I was quoted $18 per day. Still a good deal.

Our rental it through Avis as well. Hence, my other Ferry/Avis thread...

margy, I just re-read my post and realize that I might not have been clear. You cannot specify the rental car company used with the Hotwire booking - you get assigned at the end of the transaction, after you confirm and pay . It is up to chance. That being said, I've never seen or heard of anything other than Avis being the end-result car company.

tacman, thanks for adding another notch to the Avis confirmed rentals via Hotwire.

Speaking of rental cars, most on this forum recommend 4 wheel drive for STJ, but say it isn'e necessary for STT. If I rent a regular compact car on STT, should I even bother to take it to STJ? Will I get myself in trouble trying to explore? Is it worth the cost and hassle of the car ferry ?
