We used this company located in havensight Mall to rent a jeep for the week. Be careful what you pay for. The jeep was WAY ragged out. No functioning seatbelts in the back for our kids. Holes in the floor. No directions out of the airport. The people were nice enough though and it got us through the week, until at the end of the week and once we get back to the US we discover a charge on our account for sand in the jeep. Really! Sand on an island! It appears they find a way to get more money when they need to. Renter beware.
c18always - How would you rate rentamotion versus their competitors (Discount Rental, Dependable, etc)? I got estimates from all and rentamotion is about $100 cheaper for the week. Would you say its worth paying a little extra for peace of mind? I am coming in for my honeymoon and taking the jeep to St John. None of the SJ rental companies allow you to fold the top back, which is why we're renting from St Thomas. Other than that, we're just looking for something relatively new, clean and reliable. Any suggestions for best rental company?
I'd never even heard of "Rent a motion" before this. and I can find no listing for any company close to this name either in the white or yellow pages. The agencies with consistently good reviews are Amalie, Dependable, Discount and Avis. It can't be guaranteed that all STT agencies will allow the tops taken off or rolled back on their Jeeps so check on that.
We rented from Discount last week and had a good experience. No issues with rental, return, charges, etc. The owner of the property we were renting picked us up from the airport and took us to Discount (just down the street from the airport), but they will pick you up (and take you back, of course). They require either a credit card or an exorbitant hold on a debit card, but that worked out fine for us--no issues getting the hold released or anything. Only drawback is that they don't allow their vehicles to go to St. Joh, but that was no problem for us as we just ferried over. Bottom line being, I would definitely recommend them if you don't require a car to take to St. John.
RentAMotion used to have a kiosk at Yacht Haven Grande a few years ago, but it closed. When they were there, they had a nice fleet of jeeps sitting in the parking lot. I thought they had gone out of business, and though I'm in the Havensight area at least once a week, I've never noticed them in their new location.
Is that the same company that rents scooters? I'm pretty sure they used to rent scooters, too, when they were at Yacht Haven Grande.

I found a website which indicates they rent scooters, motorcycles and kayaks as well as Jeeps.
STT, I think that's their old website from their Yacht Haven Grande days. I think I would only use them as a last resort, since they don't even have a listing in the phone book. You know how quickly things come and go here.
Just wanted to mention that I wasn't entirely accurate in re: to Discount. They apparently will let you take their four wheel drive vehicles to St. John.

I'm glad you clarified that as it went against all I thought I knew and I was planning on calling them tomorrow. Hertz is the only agency who doesn't allow any of their vehicles to go to St John and most of the others will, if you're planning on staying on St John, insist that you rent a 4WD. Otherwise, visitors staying on STT get around STJ just fine with a 2WD drive vehicle for a day trip. You don't need 4WD on STT period - save the money!
There were definitely times I wish we'd had a 4WD vehicle on STT but, overall, I agree that it's not worth spending the extra money.
