I am thinking of renting a small economy car when we come to STT. Is that a good idea? How is parking? How are the roads? In the towns and in the country? Or am I better off taking cabs. Is there any public transportation on the islands? And if so is it good? That's a lot of questions but would like to make an informed decision. Thanks.

If you plan on staying more than 3 days and want to visit numerous places, rent the car.
Roads are drive on the left, very narrow and winding.
Parking in Charlotte Amalie is very hard to find, but not impossible. Reasonable everywhere else.
Public transportation is not very good so everyone uses safari (open taxi). Rates are posted on this site.

A small compact car would probably run you about 50 bucks or so for the day. Roads are good. Parking in town is on and off, other places.... no problem.

Public transpo is hit or miss. Best of luck!

My husband and I were glad we rented a car. We were there for six days and had the ability to go where ever and when ever we wanted.

Apparently, it is usually more expensive to use the Taxis (depending on how much you will be out and about). Walking isn't great because of all the hills and there aren't many sidewalks around.
