I'm just wondering how likely it is that I will be able to check out some reggae music? My wife and I will be on St John from July 8th - 18th and are huge fans of the music. I know most of the bigger V.I. reggae artist are coming out of St Croix (i.e. Midnite, Bambu Station, Black Culture, etc.), but do they also perform regularly around St John and St Thomas? The Virgin Islands are producing some awesome reggae talent and we are just hoping to check some of it out while were there.

Btw..if you have never heard any music by Midnite, I strongly urge you to check them out. "Unpolished" is one of my all-time favorites.

Jam Band is from St. Thomas and they are a calypso band, not reggae.

It is too bad that you will not be in St. John during Carnival.
All the island bands (or most) play in the Carnival village the
week before July 4 th. July 4 th is the end of Carnival in St. John.
Maybe, on your next visit. Inner Visions is the local reggae band in St. John they also do stateside tours. THEY ARE GREAT!!! Maybe they will be a Fred's while you are there. Check them out you will love them too! If not pick up their CD's while on St. John .

You'll be out of luck as far as seeing Inner Visions. For the last several years they've toured on the mainland during summer and through the fall. It's great that they're doing well, but I was used to always being able to see them at Fred's any Wednesday of any month of the year.

Thanks for the info!
bh: I've actually heard inner visions before, but I didn't know they were from the V.I.. If anyone else is curious about there sound here's a link to a site that has a bunch of there music available to stream.

http://www.arawakroots.com/innervisions.php

You can check out there schedule at http://www.digitaldudes.com/home.htm.

unfortunately, they have not posted dates past May. It looks like there playing in St john a ton until then though.

Are there bars, venues or whatever that tend to have alot of reggae on St John? So I know which one's to watch out for. Thanks

Just found a real sweet site called V.I. Reggae that has a bunch of radio streams of reggae coming out of the Virgin Islands. Awesome site!

Other than Inner Visions at Fred's, I haven't seen or heard of any other Reggae on STJ. I sure do wish there was more of that and less of the "American" music that is mostly heard there!

Mango,

I agree with you 100%! There was a time where all you heard in the islands was Calypso, Reggae, and music from little squash and fungi bands. Sad to say those days are long gone. I would not be at all surprised if this Carnival I heard Country and Western music in the village.

I dunno, although we have imported American music of all kinds, I think we are still a predominantly calypso and reggae island, so don't worry about the music scene being too Americanized. Of course, I am talking about St. Croix and St. Thomas, I can't really speak for St. John. That's what I like about home, there is a scene for almost any music you like.
